      Contract type: Permanent.

Working hours: 35 hours per week, full time.

      About the role

This is an exciting opportunity in Lambeth Council’s Climate Change and Sustainability Team for a recent graduate to develop their career or for an experienced professional to jump straight in to.

You will be leading on the management of local flood risk in Lambeth, by developing management strategies for surface water through to implementing them in policy, public initiatives and built infrastructure projects. You will also be responsible for creating, developing and managing relationships between internal departments and external stakeholder, and support them with your advice guidance and technical expertise related to the risks of climate change and flood risk.

Key duties you will be directly involved in include:

      • Support the team and undertake your own project management in the ambitious £6 million “Soak Up Lambeth” SuDS Programme. This is made up of 35 individual SuDS schemes across Lambeth’s parks, estates, highways and schools. The largest programme of retrofit SuDS in London.
      • The development and delivery of a new Local Flood Risk Management Strategy, and related strategies.
      • Explore and develop new climate adaptation initiatives across the borough.
      • Investigate reports of flooding and identify their source and cause.
      • Providing consultation response for planners on matters relating to surface water flood risk and surface water management in new developments.
      • Apply for grant funding to support the council’s ambitions towards net zero and climate resilience.
      • Create, maintain, and utilise spatial data relating to environmental risks, hazards and assets.

This post would suit individuals who are committed to collaborative working to improve Lambeth’s natural and build environments and efforts to be resilient to climate change. We’re not looking for typical flood risk officers, we want people to apply who are passionate about the water environment and changing the status quo in light of our climate emergency commitments. The post does require good analytical skills and an attention to detail.

For the successful candidate, a career grade will be given upon a review of your skills and knowledge presented through the application, test and interview. If hired at a PO1 or PO2 level, periodic reviews will be offered to assess progress towards the PO3 position.
