      The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Department of Human Services (DHS) merged on July 1, 2022 to form one agency, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

      We are seeking a Forensic Autopsy Technician

      Prepares the autopsy suite. Labels forms, diagrams, and specimen containers. Assists the Forensic Pathologist/Pathologist Assistant with moving bodies in the autopsy suite and eviscerating organs from bodies. Weighs all organs; collects specimens including bodies fluids and tissue, documents decedent's possessions, valuables, and specimens to record in the case management system. Restores body following postmortem examination and cleans the morgue areas, tools, and equipment to ensure they are free of blood, other body fluids, airborne pathogens, and other undesirable materials.

      Assists with archiving photos, maintaining toxicology, evidence, histology, and tissue specimens for easy retrieval/destruction. Keeps logbooks and chain of custody when collecting, receiving, storing, or transferring/releasing bodies, evidence, toxicology, and specimens. Coordinates and prepares toxicology and other specimens for shipment to consultation laboratories and assists with tissue, toxicology, and organ destruction.

      Will assist with training new employees and medical students in autopsy procedures as needed and learning how to schedule techs for shifts.

      Travels throughout the State of Iowa for delivery and/or receipt of specimens/evidence.
      Assists with managing supply inventory by stocking supplies, performing inventory, and
      ordering supplies.

      Observes and helps with postmortem x-rays while observing proper radiation protection.
      Assists with service contracts by originating initial annual service contract renewal process.

      Assists with review and amending office standard operating procedures in accordance with NAME.

      Perform quality control by reviewing entries in the case management system.

      • Incumbent must have a valid diver's license.
      • Incumbent must be able to move heavy objects (bodies up to 300 pounds) by oneself or with the assistance of another employee.
      • Incumbent must be able to travel at a moment's notice (24 hours a day) anywhere within the state of Iowa.
