- Type letters, table, reports, memorandums and other material from copy, rough draft, and detailed instruction. Performs other routine clerical duties such as filling materials in various ways; make routine posting to various departments; opens and distributes mail. Checks and looks for information on computer,
- Receives and completes reports from citizens in person and over the telephone. Receives and processes documents from members of the Department; delivers all communications to the proper place at designated time; in cases needing immediate attention, notifies Commanding Officer of the situation involved.
- Maintains a record of all stolen and repossessed automobiles and the autos impounded by the Police Department.
- Respectfully answers questions and directs the public from walk in requests.
- Performs index operations which includes, but is not limited to, clearly and professionally communicating on the police two-way radio, runs driver's license checks, criminal history checks, enters and removes safety sensitive data (stolen vehicles, warrants, missing juveniles, etc.) from L.E.A.D.S. and N.C.I.C. Performs all index functions and is able to multi-task and prioritize safety sensitive information in an expedited and efficient manner.
- Performs related work as required.
Work involves the performance of routine clerical duties following established methods and procedures in highly unusual work setting. The clerical functions of this position, while vital to the job performance, are second in nature when considering the law enforcement setting which requires the application of common sense and decision making of learned procedures in working for and with the public. There are several areas within the Police Department where a Police Clerk may be assigned (Police Desk, Accident Investigation Unit, Index, Records and Identification, Crime Laboratory, Juvenile, Detectives, Vice, and Family Investigative Unit). Each area is unique unto itself while requiring a working knowledge and familiarity with all other units and divisions. Some of the specific duties include:
High School diploma or GED equivalent with supplemental courses in typing and word processing. At least one-year experience working with computers in an office setting. Must be able to familiarize themselves with state laws, city ordinances, L.E.A.D.S. and N.C.I.C. policy, and the rules and regulations of the Police Department. Must become LEADS certified within 90 days of hire. Have general knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment. All candidates for employment with the City of Youngstown must be a resident of Mahoning County or an Ohio County that is adjacent to Mahoning County at time of hire.Applicants must meet the above required qualifications to be considered.
EXAMINATION INFORMATION:TYPE: TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE EVALUATION: Applicant’s grade will be determined based on Education and Experience found in the application and resume.

BONUS POINTS WILL BE ADDED TO PASSING SCORES (70%) ON THE FOLLOWING BASIS:
20% - MILITARY (DD-214 showing 180 days of active duty service and proof of honorable discharge required) 15% - Reserve Component – upon completion of entry-level training.
15% - PROOF OF CITY RESIDENCY (Submit four (4) different proofs of residency from one (1) year ago and four (4) different current proofs of residency – total of 8) Proof of Residency must be scanned and emailed to civilservice@youngstownohio.govNOTE: ALL COPIES OF DIPLOMAS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND RESUMES MUST BE UPLOADED AT THE TIME OF FILING. Original college transcripts are required as verification of educational attainments.
