- Works on organization, implementation and installation of four art exhibitions in the Widener Gallery each academic year (two in fall semester and two in spring semester).
- Works with Studio Arts faculty who comprise the gallery selection committee to envision and plan exhibitions. Provides input and maintains dialogue with gallery selection committee. Visits studios/collections to formalize exhibition proposals.
- Keeps apprised of art locally and globally, as well as in the Trinity College art collection, to informatively contribute to the development of exhibition plans.
- Responsible for organizing transport of artwork, scheduling, formulating and implementing exhibition installation and de-installation plan, communications with artist(s) including preparation of exhibition loan agreement.
- Responsible for arranging visits (accommodation, meals, introductions to faculty) for artists during installation and later programming.
- Responsible for preparation of timely exhibition press releases in consultation with exhibition committee, liaise with graphic designer for design and printing of promotional materials, liaise with college Communications office. Contribute to Studio Arts and Trinity College social media accounts and calendars.
- Prepares gallery didactics such as wall labels or introductory texts in consultation with gallery selection committee to be used in advance of exhibitions for promotional purposes.
- Communicates with faculty across campus to create interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Leads gallery talks and visiting class sessions.
- Coordinates and participates in gallery receptions and other events.
- Coordinates photo/video and informational documentation of exhibitions.
- Creates content and regular updates for a new Widener Gallery website, with input from Studio Arts Faculty and Trinity technical personnel.
- Responsible for arranging visits (accommodation, meals, introductions to faculty) for artists during installation and later programming.
- Hires and supervises student assistants and gallery attendants as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned and based on departmental need.
- BA or BFA required; MA or MFA preferred, with curatorial experience at a college or university art gallery and experience in all aspects of art exhibition planning, installation and outreach.
- Art preparator experience and familiarity with art installation methods such as hanging paintings, gallery lighting, packaging and unpackaging artwork for shipment.
- Strong verbal communication and writing skills.
- Detail-oriented administrative skills that include assessing scope of programming, creating clear work schedules to develop exhibitions, and preparing detail-oriented materials, such as loan agreements, gallery checklists, and promotional materials.
- Familiarity with multi-media installation techniques such as projections and in-gallery video monitors.
- Familiarity with basic web design, social media platforms, Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign and Photoshop)

Trinity College Studio Arts Program seeks a Gallery Director and Organizing Curator to facilitate exhibition plans in the college’s primary gallery, The Widener Gallery, and to serve as a liaison between the gallery and the community within Trinity College and Hartford. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of contemporary art, experience as an art preparator, written communication skills, and ability to engage with students, faculty and the public. Administrative skills are essential for planning all components of producing exhibition programming. The Widener is a scholarly, and innovative exhibition space (1100 square feet) on the campus of a liberal arts college located in the city of Hartford.
This is a half-time academic year position (approximately 20 hours/week, nine / ten months a year), with extensive on-campus work.
The Gallery Director and Organizing Curator coordinates all aspects of planning, organizing, designing, publicizing and installation of four art exhibitions per academic year in the college’s primary art gallery, The Widener Gallery. Gallery Director serves as a liaison between the gallery and the community within Trinity College and Hartford. The Gallery Director engages with students, faculty and the public and hosts gallery visits and talks relevant to exhibition content.
