      Job Description

      About the Role

      Garden maintenance in Desert Garden. Reports to area supervisor

      S/he/they will demonstrate a background of working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible approach.

      Essential Duties

      • Daily maintenance of the Desert gardens at the direction of the garden manager: weeding, watering, propagating, pruning, transplanting, harvesting, mulching, and fertilizing.

      • Assisting with on-site documentation, data collection, event preparation, leading volunteers, and seasonal planning.

      • May be asked to perform tasks in other areas of the Huntington Botanical Gardens as needed.

      • Must adhere to written safety policy, following all precautions and directions in use of equipment and chemicals.

      Working Conditions

      • Outdoor work in variable weather conditions.

      • Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs. on a regular basis.

      Candidate Requirements and Experience

      Knowledge, skills and abilities:

      • 2 -3 years of professional gardening experience required

      • Associate ’s D egree or higher preferred.

      • Strong and demonstrated interest in gardening and horticulture and k nowledge of general cultivation of plants, watering, pruning, planting, and soil health.

      • Attention to detail in the garden.

      • A good understanding of English is preferred .

      • Must work well independently and collaboratively.

      • Must be able to stoop, bend, walk long distances and lift moderate (and occasionally heavy) loads.

      • Must be competent in the proper use of hand and mechanized tools.

      • Must be able to work safely, efficiently and complete tasks within specified timeframe.
