- Perform landscape maintenance of turf, ornamental plants, soil, wetlands, and retention/detention ponds; install new turf and repair damaged areas.
- Maintain, modify, and repair irrigations systems and program system controllers.
- Operate and maintain all landscape gardening equipment; perform preventative maintenance and repair as necessary.
- Mix and apply pesticides and herbicides for pest and plant control; maintaining up-to-date pesticide records as required by the State Department of Agriculture.
- Work with the unit supervisor and Senior Gardeners on establishing an irrigation system schedule and/or updating system blueprints as needed.
- Knowledge of landscape planting principles and techniques.
- Knowledge of landscape gardening materials and operating equipment.
- Knowledge of basic hand and gas-powered tools.
- Knowledge of irrigation systems principles and techniques including design, installation, and maintenance of non-potable water systems.
- Knowledge of working with pesticides and herbicides.
- Ability to perform field work, use ladders, and work around noxious odors and high noise levels.
- Ability to effectively engage in and sustain relationships with people from diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.

- Washington State Public Pesticide Public Operator’s license (within 12 months of employment).
- Work Location : Brightwater Treatment Plant - 22505 State Route 9 SE, Woodinville WA and other King County facilities as needed.
- Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. The position requires the ability to work all shift schedules and required to report to work during adverse and inclement weather conditions.
- Union Representation : This position is represented by S.E.I.U. 925 (Wastewater Treatment Division)
- Physical Requirement : Incumbents perform field work at a wastewater treatment plant and associated facilities and are required to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, use ladders, and there is exposure to hazardous chemicals and noxious odors. A pre-employment physical, review of driving record and reference checks will be conducted prior to any final job offer.

The King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) has a staffing need for skilled Gardener at our Brightwater Treatment Plant. This is a great opportunity for an individual to be apart of a team whose collective efforts leads to a healthy King County. The exciting challenge to maintain 110 acres of public open space with 3 miles of walking trails surrounding a modern wastewater treatment plant will give the successful candidate the opportunity to learn, grow and apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of ways. The successful applicant will work with a team of Utility Workers, Painters, Senior Gardeners, and Custodians to help the Wastewater Treatment Division maintain a healthy environment and the public health of residents of King County.
About the Role:
The mission of a Gardener at WTD is to maintain the grounds and landscape of different Wastewater Treatment Division facilities. This position works with the Senior Gardener to not only maintain landscape, irrigation systems and gardening equipment, but beautify WTD facilities in the communities that they are in and serve.
About the Team:
The Building & Grounds team maintains the facilities and grounds of the Wastewater Treatment Division and carries out essential work that protects the environment and all members of the public. We are comprised of a group of professionals that strives to deliver outstanding service through a collaborative effort both at our treatment plants and offsite collection facilities. This contributes to safe and healthy communities in King County and helps the conservation and protection of habitats, ecological functions, and water quality in the Puget Sound.
