      This job responds to assigned departmental maintenance needs and is responsible for the execution of repairs or replacement of affected equipment in assigned area. The General Mechanic must be familiar with a wide range of skilled crafts including, but not limited to, plumbing, electrical, HVAC-R and carpentry. The General Mechanic responds to and repairs specialty systems such as the nurse call system, fire alarm system, television system, medical gas system, and the ceiling system. The General Mechanic refers requests beyond the scope of this position to the Facilities Manager for distribution to a specialty mechanic. The General Mechanic uses hand and power tools necessary for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and painting repairs.

      Education

      Required - High School diploma or equivalent


      Work Experience
      Required - 5 years in maintenance experience; must be mechanically inclined including experience working with minimal supervision and multi-tasking. Experience using all hand tools and power tools required to properly perform job duties. Experience troubleshooting and problem-solving equipment issues.

      Preferred- Healthcare experience


      Certifications

      Required - Valid driver’s license from state of residence

      Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

      • Healthcare experience
      • Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, heating/ventilation/air conditioning/refrigeration (HVAC-R).
      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
      • Strong interpersonal skills
      • Skills to read, write and understand schematic drawings, blueprints, specifications, etc. Have a will do attitude.


      Job Duties

      • Performs general repairs and troubleshooting.
      • Performs daily maintenance inspections/repairs in assigned area.
      • Utilizes effective judgment and decision making skills when performing job duties
      • Performs other duties as assigned.
      • Adheres to Ochsner’s policies.
      • Completes Preventive Maintenance (PM) inspections according to schedule
      • Follows up on completed/current assignments.

      Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
