      Job summary

      Clerkenwell Medical Practice has an exciting opportunity for a part time General Practice Nurse to join our supportive and expanding team. We welcome applications from both experienced and newly qualified General Practice Nurses who have completed, or are in the process of completing, a recognised postgraduate training programme for General Practice Nursing.

      We are a well-established NHS GP surgery located in Clerkenwell, London EC1, around the corner from City ,University of London and the renowned Exmouth Market, described as "one of central Londons most charming spots" by London TimeOut.

      Main duties of the job

      As a General Practice Nurse, your core responsibilities will include:

      • Providing assessment, screening, and treatment services
      • Advising patients on general health, chronic disease management, and minor ailments (with GP referrals where necessary)
      • Carrying out cervical screening accredited training is essential; applicants currently undertaking training will also be considered
      • Delivering immunisations and vaccinations in line with national schedules
      • Supporting and mentoring trainee General Practice Nurses and Healthcare Assistants

      All work will be carried out in accordance with NMC standards, practice protocols, and national guidance.

      Job description

      Job responsibilities

      • Assist the whole team to help deliver effective implementation of management of patients and their needs.
      • Conduct patient assessments and take medical histories to provide comprehensive care.
      • Assist in the management of chronic diseases by monitoring patient progress and providing education on self-management techniques.
      • Educate patients on health promotion, disease prevention and healthy lifestyle.
      • Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care
      • Advise patients on general health care and minor ailments with referral to GPs as necessary
      • Maintaining efficient liaison with all areas of the primary care team and other agencies to assure continuity of care throughout.
      • Clinical skills will include some or all the following (this list is not exhaustive):
      1. Women's health
      2. Family planning
      3. Cervical cytology
      4. Wound care
      5. Suture and clip removal
      6. Travel health
      7. Ear syringing
      8. Smoking cessation
      9. Long term conditions management: Asthma/Peak Flow Readings/Spirometry; COPD; Diabetes reviews (including food checks and care planning); Hypertension, Atrial Fibrillation, Heart Failure and CHD Management; CKD management;
      10. Undertake screening including BP checks, height, weight, BMI, Urinalysis, smoking status, etc.
      11. New Patient checks
      12. Over 75 years old Health Check
      13. Undertake venepuncture according to practice protocol
      14. Weight management
      15. Vaccinations and Immunisations

      Administer injections under an individualised prescription or PGD

      Continuously update your knowledge of the implications of immunisation and contra-indications

      Maintaining cold chain to ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs.

      • Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
      • Assisting GPs with minor surgery.

      Infection prevention and control:

      1. Support patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures
      2. Lead or participate in infection prevention and control internal audit.
      3. Apply infection control measures within the practice according to local and national guidelines. This includes:

      Universal hygiene precautions

      The collection and handling of laboratory specimens

      Segregation and disposal of waste materials

      Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment

      Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries

      Dealing with blood and body fluid spillages

      Ensure the safe management and disposal of clinical waste and PPE

      Emergency management

      To be competent in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques.

      Support maintaining/ maintain emergency trolley/ emergency drugs.

      To attend updates when required.

      Other tasks will include:

      1. Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses and GPs
      2. Maintaining GP and Nurses rooms, stocking and rotating items as required
      3. Ensure the safe management and disposal of clinical waste and PPE
      4. Chaperoning and assisting patients who are being examined by another clinician.
      5. Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms
      6. Supporting to order / ordering of Health Promotion Literature
      7. Supporting to order / ordering of stock from the District Hospital
      8. Ordering of vaccinations to maintain stock levels
      9. Participation in administrative systems in the Practice
      10. Maintain accurate patient medical records and documentation in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
      11. A duty to advise management of potential problems or errors within a range of assigned tasks
      12. Attend and participate in any Practice meetings when required.
      13. On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits
      14. Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post
