      The Genetic Counseling Assistant supports clinical and research activities related to cancer genetic counseling with Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University. The Genetic Counseling Assistant will be required to undergo in-house training and be familiar with genetic counseling administrative and clinical processes and research protocols. The primary responsibilities of this position are to support Genetic Counselors and other research investigators with activities that take place both virtually and in-person at multiple locations.

      Essential Job Statements


      Research - Identifying, recruiting, and consenting research participants

      Research - Abstracting medical records (e.g., genetic test data, family history information) relevant for research

      Research - Entering and managing research data and tracking participants

      Research - Preparing relevant regulatory and administrative documents and records (e.g., IRB, OnCore)

      Clinical - Triaging cancer genetic counseling referrals and answering questions patients and referring providers have about cancer genetic counseling services

      Clinical - Assisting in preparing patient appointments, including gathering/summarizing medical records and ensuring patients complete pre-visit intake forms

      Clinical - Facilitating genetic testing, which may include pre-test consent, completing test request forms, obtaining insurance pre-authorization, arranging sample collection, tracking genetic testing orders, and addressing missing/delayed orders

      Clinical - Assisting with clinical documentation, including maintaining and/or building clinical databases

      Clinical - Communicating directly with patients/families in consultation with genetic counselors and/or other program staff

      Clinical - Preparing patient education materials

      Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects to support the mission of VCU and VCUHS. Provides assistance to team members. Accepts alternate assignments, as required.

      Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

      Required Education:

      High school diploma or equivalent

      Combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

      Bachelor’s degree in genetics, biology, health services, or closely related fields
