      Freese and Nichols is looking for an experience Geologist to join our Water Resources Design team in Houston, Texas. The position includes providing geologic analyses for the firm’s wide variety of heavy-civil infrastructure projects. The geologist will be responsible for various aspects of projects that include: staking borings and utility coordination, coordination and supervision of drilling subcontractors, logging borings, piezometer (open riser and vibrating wire), relief well and inclinometer installation, field testing including packer and pressuremeter testing and preparation of geological reports. The geologist will work independently, as well as plan and supervise junior-level staff as needed. The interest and ability to supervise, coach and mentor junior-level staff is strongly desired. The position also involves client interaction and a commitment to client service. Site visits for studies, and occasional construction site visits to support resident engineers/representatives and/or clients is expected. In-state and some out-of-state travel is required.

      Functional Responsibilities:

      • Perform site investigations including data collection, classification of soil and rock materials (includes preparation of field boring logs), oversight of piezometer and well installations, pump and packer tests, study of exposed stratigraphic and structural relationships and mapping of geologic units.
      • Evaluate seismic impacts on project sites and prepare fault studies.
      • Identify subsurface geologic relations which impact material distribution and quantity estimates, slope stability and engineering design.
      • Conduct geologic analyses as part of a team and present results in a written report. Submit report to Project Manager and Group Manager for final review.
      • Evaluate geological suitability of site locations for dams and fluid retaining structures.
      • Utilize technical procedures and tools in stratigraphic and structural analyses of subsurface geologic units.
      • Experienced engineer to provide supervision of engineers, geologists, staff engineers, and drafting technicians assigned to projects. Coordinate assigned work to ensure continuity, consistency, and quality.
      • Recommend original ideas pertaining to data collection and exploration strategies to define subsurface elements.
      • Maintain established schedule. Keep the Group Manager and/or project manager and team abreast of all project activities, responding promptly to needs, problems, or requests associated with field work and project design.
      • Remain state-of-the-art on existing and related technological advancements.
      • Must be able to efficiently work, supervise, and communicate with team members across different offices.

      Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geology, or a closely related field.
      • 3+ years of experience.
      • Ability to utilize software including Microsoft Office products; ArcGIS products are preferred but not required.

      Preferred:

      • Professional Geologist License
      • Master's Degree
