- Develops site study plans and serves as Project Manager during site investigation, applying the principles and practices of related sciences such as geology, toxicology, hydrogeology, hydrology, chemistry, and soil science as necessary in order to design appropriate field investigations.
- Oversees the proper execution of this investigation plan, maintains detailed and legally defensible records, and identifies actual and/or potentially impacted water supplies, fisheries, wetlands and other sensitive environments.
- Applies the US EPA Hazard Ranking System (HRS) to recommend those sites posing significant threats to human health and/or the environment for listing on the National Priorities List (NPL) and subsequent long-term remediation under the federal Superfund program.
- Oversees US EPA and contractor removal investigation activities, reviews removal and remedial investigation plans to ensure that sound investigation methodologies are used, ensures that Applicable or Relevant and Appropriate Requirements (ARARS) are followed, and that cleanup levels are met as per the federal National Contingency Plan and the State Inactive Hazardous Site Remediation Goals.
- Conducts O&M work on fund-lead sites that have been transferred to the State, including groundwater sampling and preparing O&M reports on sampling results associated with Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA) or active remediation systems.
- Demonstrated experience in analyzing or evaluating data.
- Demonstrated experience communicating information through written and/or verbal communication.

DEQ has an open opportunity for a Geologist/Hyd rogeologist.This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
This Geologist/Hydrogeologist position will investigate uncontrolled and unregulated hazardous waste sites in NC. The Hydrogeologist manages and conducts site investigations to characterize the nature and extent of contamination at the site, determines contaminant migration off site and assesses the actual and/or potential impact to the surrounding community and the environment.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL the following:
Bachelor's degree in geology, geosciences, physical science or a related field, or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science coursework from an accredited college or university. Some positions may require licensure as a Professional Geologist by the North Carolina Board for the Licensing of Geologists; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
