      Department Overview:

      The Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison is a national leader in forest science and wildlife ecology research, teaching, and training.

      Schedule:

      Work hours are flexible and can be arranged around the student’s class schedule with supervisor approval.

      Qualifications:

      Currently enrolled in an environmental or geospatial undergraduate or graduate program.

      Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

      The ideal candidate will have:
      • Understanding of GIS concepts, including projections, digitization, attribute tables
      • Familiarity with image interpretation and photogrammetry principles
      • Experience using GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), and spreadsheets (Excel)
      • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow protocols and best practices
      • Solid organizational skills and the ability to manage files and data systematically
      • The ability to work independently and communicate effectively with team members
      Additional qualifications that are not required but would be beneficial include:
      • Familiarity with Wisconsin tree species and forest ecosystems
      • Interest in developing or contributing to independent research or project ideas

      Position Summary/Job Duties:

      Key Responsibilities
      The student will support multiple ongoing projects by performing tasks such as:
      1. Digitizing individual tree crowns by interpreting high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery, along with ancillary geospatial data
      2. Performing quality control checks on digitized features to ensure accuracy and consistency
      3. Entering, organizing, and archiving data with lab-wide standards and databases
      4. Assisting in the development or refinement of protocols and documentation
      5. Creating maps or visual outputs for presentations, reports, or for internal use

      Physical Demands:

      This role involves prolonged periods of computer use and desk work.
