- Perform mapping duties obtaining data used for electronic mapmaking or other Geographic Information Systems (GIS) purposes. May calculate GIS information and create maps from source data, such as surveying notes, aerial photography, satellite data, or other maps to show topographical features, political boundaries, and other features. May verify the accuracy and completeness of maps. This position may require travel in/outside the local area at short notice in response to emergency operations.
- Getting Information-Receiving or otherwise obtaining GIS or spatial database information from all relevant sources. These sources include federal, state, regional, county, and local authorities as well as private sources.
- Documenting/Recording information. Entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining information in electronic geospatial databases and accompanying metadata tiles. This includes re-projection or translation of data to standard datum and projects. Create Metadata files for each data set that met Federal Geodetic Survey (NGS) and Federal Geographic Data Committee (NGDC) standards.
- Interacting with Computers-Controlling electronic geospatial databases and associated computer functions by using GIS programs, geospatial database tools, and other electronic mapping programs, setting up functions, or otherwise communicating with computer systems to produce spatially accurate information.
- Processing information-Compiling geospatial data, coding GIS databases, categorizing data, calculating necessary data fields and tables, tabulating, auditing, verifying the accuracy of, or processing GIS information or geospatial data.
- Analyzing Data or Information- Identifying facts by analyzing GIS information of geospatial data into separate components. Verifies identification of topological features and accuracy of geospatial positions by comparison with aerial photographs, old maps, and other reference materials.
- Evaluating Information Against Standards-Evaluating information against National Mapping Accuracy Standards and verifying that the data is spatially correct. Maintain data standards that are supportive of response to Domestic Security as well as nature events.
- Support Decision-making and Resolving Issues-Examining, evaluating, and processing geospatial information to enable supervisors to make better informed decisions and resolve issues. These processes involve making decisions about the relative importance of information and choosing the best methods to process and present geospatial data.
- Knowledge of geospatial technologies including web-based GIS, mobile GIS, and enterprise GIS solutions.
- Knowledge of web application design and maintenance.
- Ability to perform tasks individually and in groups utilizing a variety of software/environments such as ArcGIS, SQL, ArcGIS Online, and other GIS/Web software.
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot large format plotters and printers.
- Ability to travel and work non-traditional hours.
- Must be quick to dissect and disseminate technical data, communicate the results effectively, and share accordingly.
- A minimum of three years’ GIS experience in a professional setting, or possess a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Proficient with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
- Experience with Python programming.

This position is located in Tallahassee, FL
The Florida Division of Emergency Management plans for and responds to both natural and man-made disasters. These range from floods and hurricanes to incidents involving hazardous materials or nuclear power. The Division of Emergency Management (FDEM or Division) is the liaison between federal, state, and local agencies. FDEM prepares and implements a statewide Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, routinely conducts extensive exercises to test state and county emergency response capabilities, provides technical assistance to local governments as they prepare emergency plans and procedures, as well as conducts emergency operations trainings for state and local government agencies.
The Division serves as the lead agency for the State Emergency Response Team (SERT), whose primary goal is the coordination of the state’s efforts during disaster response and recovery. This coordination is conducted within the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) in Tallahassee. Additionally, the Division manages the State Watch Office; the 24-hours a day operation tasked with providing situational awareness to stakeholders statewide. After a disaster, FDEM conducts damage assessment surveys and advises the Governor of the state of Florida on whether to declare an emergency and seek federal relief funds. It is against this backdrop that FDEM strives to demonstrate its mission of, “Coordinate, collaborate and communicate with our community stakeholders for a resilient Florida” along with our vision of, “Leading the Profession in building prepared and resilient communities”.
