      Job Summary

      The Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist is responsible for the creation, maintenance, and distribution of geospatial data and products. They are responsible for producing and updating various geospatial outputs including data products, maps, and charts. Additionally, the GIS Specialist is responsible for documenting, and maintaining processes, and workflows related to the geospatial data chain. Other responsibilities of the GIS Specialist include acting as the direct point of contact in the provisioning of chart and maps to support subject matter experts.

      Key Accountabilities:

      • Collect, assess, process, store, and manage geospatial data and information from various sources, including survey data, terrain data, vertical structure data, and other geospatial data. Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and availability for use in NAV CANADA operations. Ensure compliance with geospatial data standards and protocols. Validate data against established standards, perform metadata validation, and enforce data integrity rules to uphold high-quality geospatial data.

      • Provide geospatial data and products either on-demand or at scheduled intervals, tailored to meet the specific requirements of NAV CANADA stakeholders. Assist in the enhancement of existing processes based on changing technology, data, standards, and user requirements, while managing the impact on the production workload, overall product quality and customer safety to achieve a higher quality result more efficiently.

      • Integrate changes into geospatial data products and visual representations, ensuring that the updated information is accurately reflected. Distribute the products to relevant teams within NAV CANADA for use in technology and operational decision-making. Coordinate with stakeholders to determine data requirements and update data products accordingly.

      • Respond to requests for customized geospatial data products and visual representations from internal stakeholders. Collaborate with requestors to understand their specific requirements and provide solutions within defined timelines.

      • Utilize GIS software to analyze and interpret geospatial data, deriving insights and outputs that support NAV CANADA's processes and stakeholders. Generate reports, maps, and visual representations to effectively communicate findings.

      • Provide support, training, and guidance to internal and external stakeholders on geospatial data and related software and tools. Assist in troubleshooting GIS-related issues and offer expertise in geospatial data analysis and utilization. Collaborate with team members to address technical challenges and provide recommendations for improving GIS workflows and processes. Develop, improve, and deliver training to enhance the knowledge and performance of team members, continuously improving training to adhere to all product specifications, and delivering on-job-training to new, permanent, and contract staff on geospatial information products.

      • Develop and maintain documentation related to relevant processes, including data collection methods, quality control procedures, and metadata standards. Ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation is available for reference. This includes creating user manuals to ensure consistency and facilitate knowledge sharing. Create and maintain user guides and relevant documentation. Develop instructional materials to facilitate the effective use of these tools and document workflows, functionalities, and troubleshooting steps.

      Job Requirements

      Education:

      • A post-secondary technology certificate, diploma, or degree in one of the following fields is required: Geographic Information Systems, Geography or related, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

      Experience:

      • 2+ years experience working with geospatial data and software tools.

      • Experience working in close collaboration with cross-functional business groups

      Knowledge:

      • A strong understanding of Geographical Information System (GIS) software, including the ability to use software such as MicroStation, GeoMedia, Global Mapper, and FME.

      • Knowledge of aviation, and an understanding of airspace structure, airways and navigational systems. Knowledge of aeronautical information services and products.

      • Knowledge of aeronautical and geospatial data domains and underlying technologies, spatial databases, and applications.

      • Knowledge of Geospatial data principles and spatial analysis techniques.

      • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems and complex databases, and the principles and techniques used in the management and analysis of large volumes of data and information.

      Abilities :

      • Ability to manage and organize geospatial data, including working with databases and COTS applications.

      • Ability to process large volumes of geospatial data to produce insights or derive data points.

      • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders and team members.

      • Ability to identify and troubleshoot problems related to geospatial product delivery and recommend improvements.

      • Ability to create high-quality documentation, including user and process manuals.

      • Ability to create and maintain configurations using common geospatial platforms and software

      Personal Suitability :

      • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly with stakeholders.

      • Strong organizational and analytical skills

      Working conditions:

      • This position is based in Ottawa but may be eligible for a flexible work arrangement.

      • Some travel may be required to regional offices or for training or conferences.
