      Career Opportunity

      The city of Las Vegas is accepting applications for GIS Technician. This position performs routine work in the development and updating of the Geographic Information System (GIS) database; performs routine updates to layers of the GIS database; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

      Supervision Received

      Receives direct supervision from assigned supervisor or manager and higher level staff.


      Examination Process:
      A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list.

      ELIGIBLE LIST:
      You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.

      The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.

      Selection Process:
      Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check , and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

      Essential Functions:

      1. Participates in the development of the city's geographic information systems (GIS).
      2. Administers GIS databases and software including editing, updating, testing and maintaining the databases and software; performs quality control checks to ensure the integrity of the database.
      3. Compiles data for input into the system; develops, edits and automates data layers.
      4. Assists with implementing GIS software; assists with developing procedures for using software.
      5. Writes basic database queries using Structured Query Language (SQL).
      6. Determines and executes the appropriate sequence of processing tasks to complete a GIS automation assignment.
      7. Provides GIS user support and training.
      8. Interprets plans, technical drawings, photographs, maps and legal descriptions.
      9. Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files; performs a variety of record keeping, filing, indexing and other general clerical work.
      10. Oversees or performs field checks as assigned; reviews planning and zoning actions.
      11. Responds to inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

      Marginal Functions:

      1. Performs office administrative tasks as needed.
      2. Performs a variety of special projects; coordinates projects with appropriate department staff.
      3. Stays abreast of new trends, programs and innovations.
      4. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

      Experience:

      One year of GIS data maintenance or programming experience is desirable. Some experience in the assigned department is desirable.

      Training:

      Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major in geographic information systems, information systems, geography or a related field.

      May substitute combination of equivalent education and related experience. The city assesses 1.5 years of fulltime experience as equivalent to one year of education.

      Knowledge of:

      Methods and techniques of map compilation and cartographic principals.
      GIS software programs.
      Basic ArcGIS components, tools, functions and techniques, including ArcMap and ArcCatalog.
      Basics techniques of developing and designing GIS products.
      Modern office equipment including a personal computer, PDAs, GPS receivers and peripherals.
      Fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry.
      Map projections, coordinate systems and datums.
      ESRI data formats including coverages, shapefiles and versioned geodatabases.
      Basic Structured Query Language (SQL).

      Skills in:

      Visualizing and working with multiple layers of data.
      Producing cartographic products and reports based on GIS data.
      Working with little direct technical supervision, depending on assignment.
