      GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS INTERN

      METRO ATLANTA CHAMBER

      Term of Employment : January 2024 – April 2024

      The Public Policy Team works to protect our state business climate and regional reputation by supporting key policies at the state and local levels that impact metro Atlanta’s economy, talent, and community.

      The Government Affairs Intern will support MAC staff members working daily at the Georgia State Capitol and MAC offices to shape legislation and policy impacting the region and state. Preferred skills for this internship include a desire to learn new skills, a willingness to perform public policy research, and the ability to communicate professionally to ensure MAC’s success during the legislative session.

      Our ideal candidate is a high-achiever, self-starter, and team player interested in learning about the legislative process. Successful candidates will be organized, possess strong networking and communication skills, and demonstrate personal capability in managing multiple projects without constant supervision. Responsibilities will vary and will be based on needs during the session.

      What You Will Learn/Do:

      • Monitor and report on committee meetings, hearings, floor debates, and other relevant activities
      • Track legislation key to MAC’s legislative agenda on a consistent basis
      • Leverage professional writing skills to assist with writing Public Policy Team publications on the MAC website or other digital medium
      • Contribute to policy analyses, bill summaries, reports, and other government affairs or Public Policy projects, as needed
      • Support the Public Policy Team through various administrative and support tasks
      • Assist with legislative whip counts and other activities at the State Capitol
      • Build relationships with lobbyists, legislative staff, legislators, and other public officials
      • Additional opportunities to assist with priority Public Policy or MAC projects


      What We Desire in Candidates:

      • Background in public policy, political science, government affairs, public affairs, communications, or related fields is desirable, but not required
      • Effective communication skills, written and verbal (writing sample upon request).
      • Social media and digital media proficiency
      • Organized with the ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments
      • Creative, flexible, curious, resilient
      • Strong interest in state government and the legislative process

      Skills and Attributes:

      • Organized, decisive, goal-oriented, detail-oriented, analytical, curious, adaptable
      • Self-initiating, able to work independently and as a member of a high-performing team in a dynamic environment
      • Able to work at a fast pace and respond effectively to changing requests
      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
      • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 and Google Cloud platforms
      • Valid driver’s license
      • Ability to lift items weighing 30 pounds
      • Ability to work overtime as needed
