      The Intern will work alongside senior members of the External Affairs team on a variety of important projects to support the MBTA’s legislative and public affairs functions. As a government affairs intern, the Intern will be part of the team working to build and maintain productive relationships with elected officials at the local, state, and federal level, assist with communications on MBTA projects, and conduct comprehensive policy analysis. We are seeking a people-person with a passion for politics and policy, and keen interest in public transit.

      The Intern will receive guidance and mentorship from the MBTA’s Intergovernmental Affairs Manager and other members of the MBTA’s External Affairs team. Working on the frontlines of the T’s public affairs team, the Intern will be a hands-on member of the team that analyzes legislation, advises senior leadership on political developments, and executes outreach to key stakeholders. This position engages internal and external stakeholders to make tangible, positive impacts on riders and the community at large.

      The ideal candidate would be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in political science, communications, public relations, or similar, with at least 1 year of internship experience in a legislative office or political campaign and above average skills in written and oral communication. We are looking to hire one intern who will work two days in-office and one day remote (20 hours per week) for three months.

      • Legislative Analysis: Assist the Manager of Intergovernmental Affairs in analyzing and tracking relevant pending legislation at the state and federal levels. Assist members of the External Affairs team in compiling memoranda and conducting briefings for senior leadership.
      • Constituent Services: Assist the Manager of Constituent Services in assessing and resolving issues across the MBTA’s service area. Collaborate with a variety of internal stakeholders to address on-the-ground issues in a timely manner.
      • Outreach Coordination: Assist the External Affairs team in assembling stakeholder lists and outreach plans for distribution of timely and often sensitive information.
      • Administrative Support: Compile weekly activity reports and track projects across the department. Contribute to the department’s strategic planning where relevant.
      • Participate in team / staff meetings, organization events, fieldwork, project teams, or other duties as needed.
      • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

      • Demonstrated understanding of legislative processes.
      • Experience or interest in working with elected officials and staff at the local, state, and federal levels.
      • Highly organized, motivated, and have great attention-to-detail.
      • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of products.
      • Ability to independently commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
      • Authorized to work in the United States (international students in CPT, STEM, or OPT programs through a university are eligible to apply).
