- Develop your political awareness and understanding of our governance model
- Add value to Auckland by finding innovative ways to engage our diverse communities and citizens
- Democracy & Engagement | Te Manapori, Pāhekoheko – Bring the voice of Aucklanders into council through research, public engagement and stakeholder engagement practices, and support the mayor and regional councillors to perform their governance role effectively.
- Governance Services | Ngā Ratonga Kāwanatanga – Contribute to policy advice and service delivery on a broad range of governance matters that empower our elected members, enable the public to access official information and participate in local elections, and support quality advice and learning best practice.
- Local Board Services | Ngā Ratonga a ngā Poari ā-Rohe – Support local board members across our 21 local boards and work across council and the council-controlled organisations (CCOs) to ensure local boards can effectively carry out their governance role.
- Risk & Assurance | Tūraru me te Whakaūnga – Help provide independent advice to the organisation and decision-makers on policies, processes and internal controls for managing risks.
- Auckland Emergency Management | Tokonga Mate Ohotata o Tāmaki Makaurau – Coordinate an integrated approach to managing significant risks and hazards in Auckland across the four R’s: Reduction, Readiness, Response and Recovery.
- CCO Governance & External Partnerships | Kōtuinga Kāwanatanga, ā-Waho hoki o ngā CCO – Manage governance relationships between the council and its council-controlled organisations (CCOs) and other smaller entities.

He angitūtanga: The opportunityAs a Governance graduate you will be working in the Governance Division | Te Peka Kāwanatanga. Our purpose is to enable effective democratic decision-making of Auckland Council, by enabling our decision-makers, communities, organisation, and staff so that together we can create a Tāmaki Makaurau we can be proud of.
In your two-year programme you could be spending time working in teams including:
Your rotations may be located at different service areas/offices and require travel.

Our Graduate Programme aims to provide you with the opportunities and support you need to launch your career and develop as a future leader or specialist within Auckland Council. With over 80 areas of business and the chance to work on large-scale projects, we want to see you achieve your goals while making a real difference to the lives of Aucklanders.
As part of the graduate programme, you’ll also be supported in securing a permanent role within Council at the end of your programme.
We will be with you every step of the way with a support team who want you to succeed including a mentor, graduate liaison, and graduate network. The graduate programme is typically made up of rotations across a number of business areas, giving you accelerated learning and development, all whilst helping to make Auckland a world-class city.
He kōrero mōu: About you
We are looking for an innovative graduate who has good interpersonal skills and the ability to build productive relationships. You will be highly skilled in using Microsoft Office applications and possess good judgement, problem-solving and decision-making skills. You must have an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) and its relationship to local government. We are particularly interested in candidates who are diverse, Māori or Pasifika
