- Mows lawns and trims and edges around walks, flowerbeds, walls, fences, hedges, trees and shrubs;
- Prunes trees and shrubs;
- Plants, waters, fertilizes and weeds grass, flowers, trees and shrubs;
- Rakes leaves, picks up brush and litter;
- Plows or shovels snow and spreads salt on walkways, steps, driveways, crossings, or rinks;
- Repairs and paints fences, gates, walks, walls, tables, benches, and guardrails;
- Installs playground and athletic equipment;
- Builds athletic fields;
- Cleans out gutters, drainage ditches, culverts, and catch basins;
- Operates manual, power tools and equipment;
- Operates light trucks to deliver supplies and cart debris, loads and unloads trucks;
- Operates a variety of tractors and small equipment for moving and general transport;
- Performs minor preventive maintenance tasks on grounds equipment or vehicles;
- May mark, reline or layout athletic fields.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
- Works in standard office and school building environments.
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.

Position: Grounds Equipment Operator
This is an important grounds maintenance position involving upkeep of lawns, turf grass, trees, shrubs, flowerbeds, sidewalks, driveways, and building exteriors. This employee may operate grounds motorized equipment or light-weight trucks in tending the lawns and in hauling materials and refuse. Work involves manual labor and is performed under various weather conditions including extremes of heat and cold, humidity, or inclement conditions. Effective communication with customers is paramount for both safety and courtesy when operating equipment at a busy time. The Grounds Equipment Operator works under general supervision from, and reports directly to, a higher-ranking employee. Direct supervision may be exercised over full-time, part-time, or seasonal laborers. Does related work as required.
Compensation/Pay Range: $18.45/hr. (negotiable based on experience)

Uses equipment as necessary.
Safety Requirements
Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties.
Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks. Must comply with school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.
Travel Requirements
Travel between schools, or between schools and central office, is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Good knowledge of grounds maintenance procedures and practices; good knowledge of hand tools and power equipment; working knowledge of plant care and basic landscaping; ability to safely operate hand, power, and motorized grounds tools and equipment; ability to perform preventative maintenance and minor repair work on motorized grounds equipment; ability to care for and store tools and equipment; ability to follow and give simple oral and written instructions; ability to push, hold, and lift equipment, tools, supplies, debris; willingness to perform manual labor; willingness to work alone; mechanical aptitude; endurance; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Class *D* Operator's license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment.
