  Overview

  Macalester College seeks to hire a Grounds Person to provide maintenance and care of the Macalester College campus grounds, including trees, shrubs, flowers, lawns/athletic fields, sidewalks and parking lots. Will create and maintain an aesthetically attractive campus landscape and complete seasonal grounds activities and projects in a timely, efficient and professional manner. The hours for this role will be Monday-Friday from 7am to 3:30pm.

  Responsibilities

  • Cares for campus landscapes including completing care of all plant material from planting to watering, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, mulching, pest monitoring, design, installation and maintenance of both annual and perennial plant material. Performs maintenance of trees including planting, pruning, fertilizing, watering, removal.
  • Designs flower beds and shrub beds. Works with Landscape Architect on designing appropriate campus landscapes within the campus master plan.
  • Removes snow and ice from walks and steps utilizing snow blowers, power brooms and skid loader as well as use of hand shovels and ice scrapers. Applies ice melt to roads, walks and steps.
  • Picks up trash on a daily basis. Picks up trash and recycling in outdoor containers and picks up trash on campus grounds.

  Qualifications

  Required

  • Associate's degree, or vocational or technical school degree in Horticulture
  • 3 to 5 years experience working in job that is related to grounds maintenance or horticulture.
  • Knowledge of plant material and care. Design abilities for planning and layout of plant material. Able to operate all grounds equipment.
  • Knowledge and experience to be able to operate and perform preventative maintenance on all types of grounds related equipment.

  Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture/landscape maintenance or design

  Physical Requirements:

  Candidates must be able to kneel, crouch, reach, sit, occasionally climb and lift up to 50 lbs.

  Compensation:

  This is a union position and the hourly rate is $29.23/hr
