      To perform a variety of duties and responsibilities involved in the installation and maintenance of District landscaping and grounds; and to perform a variety of utility duties and responsibilities.
      DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
      This is the full journey level class in the Grounds and Utility Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Grounds and Utility Maintenance Worker I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including the operation of more equipment. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise; and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in the class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside prior related work experience.
      SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
      Receives immediate supervision from the Assistant Director of Maintenance and Operations, and receives direction from Lead Grounds Utility Maintenance Worker.
      Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
      1. Prepare ground for planting; plant, replant, fertilize, water, trim, and prune shrubs, trees, flowers, and lawns; rake leaves from planter areas; cut fallen trees and limbs.
      2. Mow, aerate, and water lawn areas; edge sidewalk areas.
      3. Mix and apply herbicides, pesticides, and sprays over planted areas in accordance with state law.
      4. Install, repair and maintain District sprinkler systems; inspect and adjust sprinkler systems; check water volume and pressure in sprinkler systems; repair minor sprinkler problems such as replacing sprinkler heads and repairing broken water lines and valves.
      5. Operate a variety of machinery and power equipment including tractors, mowers, edgers, weed trimmers, trenching machines, back hoes, blower aerator, dump truck and dethatchers as required.
      6. Mow lawns using motorized mower; transport mower and other equipment to and from school sites.
      7. Maintain all tools and equipment; clean, grease, and adjust equipment as needed; dismantle and sharpen reels and blades as needed.
      8. Clean and maintain grounds; pick up trash on school campus; pick up broken glass and debris around campus.
      9. Load and unload trucks with school furniture, cafeteria food and supplies, and other equipment and materials; move, assemble and clean furniture as needed.
      10. Repair asphalt and concrete; mix, apply, and cut cement as needed.
      11. Repair fences and backstops.
      12. Repair playground equipment.
      13. Act as a substitute custodian and crossing guard as needed on an emergency basis.

      Experience:
      One year of professional/institutional grounds maintenance experience.
      Training:
      Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

      • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license. (a copy must be attached to the application when submitting)
      • Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license prior to the completion of the probationary period.
      • Ability to be covered under the District property/liability insurance.

      Examination
      The examination components consist of a qualifying written multiple-choice and oral exam. The most qualified applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the required exam and notified via email communication of the scheduled date, time, and location. A valid picture identification is required prior to admittance.

      After the exam procedure concludes for this recruitment, an eligibility list will be established to fill future vacancies. When eligibility lists include open and promotional lists of qualified persons through competitive examination, the promotional list will be used first, unless otherwise stated on this bulletin.


      TENTATIVE TEST DATE: Week of August 19, 2024 (subject to change as necessary)

      Work Schedule
      This position works full-time eight (8) hours per day, 40-hour work week, and observes a 12-month work calendar.

      Salary and Benefits
      The salary rate for a new employee is at the first step of the appropriate five-step salary schedule for this position. The probationary period is 130 work days (not counting sick, industrial accident). Upon becoming permanent, a one-step salary advance shall be granted with future annual advances up to the fifth step of the salary schedule.

      Holidays and Leaves
      Seventeen (17) paid holidays that fall within the work year, pursuant to the District's Collective Bargaining Agreement with California Schools Employees Association Chapter 296 (CSEA).

      Individuals employed five (5) days a week for a fiscal year of service shall be granted twelve (12) days leave of absence for illness or injury, exclusive of all days not required to render service to the District. Vacation is earned at the prescribed rate as part of compensation, and does not become vested until after completion of the initial probationary period.

      Work Environment and Physical Demands
      This job is primarily performed outdoors in and around a school campus. Incumbents are exposed to outdoor weather conditions and will work in inclement weather. Some walking, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, and twisting at waist; operate ride mower and other grounds equipment. Outdoor surfaces may include gravel, asphalt, dirt, grass, and cement, uneven pavement, slippery ground, tree roots, etc. Exposures to regular noise from custodial and groundskeeping equipment, chemicals, solvents, cleaners, fumes and vapors. Hearing and sight in normal audio and visual range with or without correction.
