The Levy Group of Companies is seeking a Hand Scarfer to work at our Burns Harbor location in Burns Harbor, IN. The Hand Scarfer will be responsible for visually inspecting processed slabs and removing surface defects via a hand-cutting torch.

Responsibilities

The Hand Scarfer will:

• Visually inspect slab surface
• Work closely with Shift Foreman and Crane Operator
• Identify defects of surface steel slabs
• Perform a visual inspection of all equipment to be used in hand scarfing process (i.e., gas and oxygen regulators, hoses and hand torch)to ensure all equipment is in proper working order.
• Remove fins, mis-scarfs and machine gouges from the surface of all steel slabs
• Complete daily inspection reports.
• Identify and report any and all problems with equipment or slabs
• May be required to perform duties of Crane Operator and/or Robotic Operator
• Shoveling slag and scale build-up during down time
• Other duties as directed by supervisor

Skills

The ideal candidate will have:

• Knowledge of harmful defects in steel surfaces (i.e., cracks, pinholes, and gouges)
• Knowledge of gas and oxygen torches and scarfing process
• Ability to push, pull, and pry up to 30 lbs and ability to lift 50 lbs
• Ability to shovel and tolerate noise, temperature variations, and environmental conditions
• Ability to maneuver equipment, stand, walk, and stoop for extended periods of time
