Job Description
- Req#: R0202641
- Operate in a lead engineering management role for hardware design and development activity and in a support role for all other activity.
- Identify the required skills, allocate responsibilities to individual contributors and leads these contributors as a team.
- Manages advanced studies dealing with new functions as well as emerging technologies, as required.
- Ensure that the development team track and manage progress against the identified activities, reporting progress, taking remedial action and escalating issues as appropriate, including Design to Cost etc with clear targets and tracking of achievement against these.
- Work with the Project / Product team to provide clear and concise reports and information regarding progress and management of Risk and Opportunities in relation to the Engineering Design and Development tasks that they are responsible for.
- Bachelors/Master’s Degree or equivalent in a numerate, scientific or engineering subject or Higher Education/equivalent training and experience.
- Experience of working within a product development environment, maintaining compliance to relevant design standards. Defence/naval experience would be highly advantageous but not essential
- Ability to lead and motivate a group of engineers to achieve a goal with a proven track record in a management role
- Experience carrying out appraisals, performance reviews, and development improvement plans with the goal of providing further development and enhanced to the careers of skilled engineers.
- Knowledge of the engineering lifecycle including interactions systems engineering, test engineering and programme manager would be advantageous

Thales is a world leader in the design and manufacture of products for the worldwide defence, aerospace and security markets. Thales Optronics and Missile Electronics (OME) designs and manufactures a diverse range of Electro-Optical products for a wide range of platforms covering Land, Sea and Air.
We’re looking for a Mechanical, Electro-mechanical Engineer or Hardware Engineer with experience managing product lifecycle development to join us in the capacity of Hardware Engineering Manager. This is a highly critical position within our Naval Engineering programme and will manage a team of circa 20 engineers, whilst also remaining involved in critical phases of product development.
Role overview
As Hardware Engineering Manager, you would hold responsibility for the completion of engineering design/development tasks within the committed cost, schedule, performance and required level of quality.
The related tasks may cover part or all the range of activities regarding customer needs, mission, function, architectural design, and life cycle of the hardware solution (requirements and speciality engineering, design, development, integration and verification).

The Work Environment
