Join EDF as a Hazard Safety Case Engineer, and you’ll join one of the most exciting and ambitious projects within EDF, as we continue to lead the rebirth of nuclear in the UK.

      The Opportunity…

At EDF we are building two new nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point C, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes.

We have a fleet of operational Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors and a Pressuriser Water Reactor at Sizewell B and we are making preparations for the construction of two further reactors at Sizewell C in Suffolk

We are looking for engineers who will be responsible for ensuring that internal and external hazards are fully considered in the design of our nuclear plant.

As a Hazards Engineer, you will be looking ahead for the lifetime of our plants and evaluating the hazards that may affect them. This may include external natural hazards such as extreme weather, climatic conditions, coastal effects, earthquakes and other natural phenomena arising on earth or from space. This also includes internal hazards such as fire, flooding, dropped loads etc that could be cause by faults inside our buildings. You will consider the impact that hazards could have on the safe operation of our plant and work to ensure that we have a secure safety case.

This is an excellent opportunity for engineers who have a background in Safety Cases with Hazards Analysis experience, who are keen to apply their experience to a nuclear energy context.

      Pay, benefits and culture…

Alongside a salary from £45,000 - £60,000 depending on experience, we offer a competitive benefits package, including a company pension scheme, a wide range of flexible benefits to suit your lifestyle, and the opportunity to earn bonus.

At EDF, everyone’s welcome. We strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone has a voice and where you feel confident being yourself. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’ll value the difference you bring and offer opportunities for you to thrive and succeed.

      What you’ll be doing…

      • Working with the EDF Nuclear Licensees to evaluate and determine the hazard frequencies magnitudes and effects, conducting and commissioning research where this is needed.
      • Working with internal and external safety regulators to agree the strategy and requirements for safe operation
      • Modelling and analysing the impact of hazards on overall plant safety
      • Developing and authoring relevant sections of the nuclear safety case
      • Oversight and acceptance of external hazard analysis and substantiation documents prepared by the Hinkley Point C Responsible Designer, and conducting surveillance activities to support this
      • Monitoring design changes arising from suppliers and construction activities
      • Developing solutions to issues identified, making recommendations, and pursuing through to closure

      Who you are…

      • Degree-level or equivalent qualification in engineering or scientific field
      • Experience in design principles in modern high hazard industry
      • An appetite for developing practical solutions to problems and following through to completion
      • Ability to work independently, to plan and manage design reviews, working directly with the designers and able to work with different stakeholders for the development of the safety case.

Your background may include some of the following:

      • Chartered member of an engineering or scientific institution
      • Working with academic and research bodies to provide insight to industry
      • Experience in structuring and authoring UK nuclear safety cases, including application of ALARP principles

      • Constructing and overall building fire hazard case
      • Internal flooding, for example from pipework failure and flow of liquids within buildings
