    • DEFINITION :
      Under supervision of the Principal, Building Administrator provides leadership and direction for the successful accomplishment of daily custodial duties and responsibilities for the Wayne Public Schools District. The job of Head Custodian is done for the purpose/s of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive campus for students, staff and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; and overseeing and supporting assigned site custodians. Incumbents in this classification provide students and staff with clean and sanitary facilities which directly support learning.

      REPORTS TO: Building Principal or Administrator, District Custodial Supervisors.

      DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS :
      Duties include hands-on custodial cleaning and custodial support and services of assigned buildings for the Wayne Public Schools District, as well as providing leadership and direction to assigned custodial staff members for custodial cleaning and custodial support and services of their assigned areas of responsibility. Incumbent is expected to exercise initiative and independence in accomplishing the duties and responsibilities of a Head Custodian, following departmental policies and procedures, developing effective work practices and solving custodial operational problems for his assigned building.

      KEY DUTIES :

      Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events.

      Assembles furniture and equipment for the purpose of completing tasks in a timely and efficient manner.

      Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, patios, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment and directs assigned custodial staff to accomplish same.

      Evaluates situations (e.g. involving staff, students, parents, the public, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.

      Facilitates meetings (e.g. safety, in-service, etc.) for the purpose of receiving/conveying information on new and/or improved procedures.

      Inspects school facilities and/or equipment (e.g. grounds, buildings, lighting, fire suppression equipment, playgrounds,etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.

      Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.

      Oversees assigned custodial staff (e.g. assigning tasks and workload, training, reviewing work, providing recommendations for improvement, etc.) for the purpose of providing guidance and direction and meeting operational requirements.

      Prepares facility for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, raising flag, cross walk signs, minor repairs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring school facilities are operational and safe.

      Prepares grounds around immediate school building for the purpose of providing adequate, attractive and safe areas for students, staff and visitors.

      Submits work orders for the purpose of requesting supplies and/or equipment, maintenance and/or grounds keeping support and services. Monitors status of all work orders for assigned building.

      Receives supplies for the purpose of verifying quality/quantity of items. Makes minor repairs to furniture, equipment and fixtures (e.g. plumbing, electrical, sheet rock, tile, lockers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.

      Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.

      Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to organization.

      Transports various items (e.g. mail, supplies, equipment, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of delivering within assigned school site.

      Assists other personnel for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

      Other Duties and Responsibilities

      Open the building each day. Check facility to ensure heating or cooling systems are functioning properly. Inspect the building exterior for possible unauthorized entrance and/or vandalism.
      Dust mop halls and clean entrance mats throughout the day. Pick up paper and other debris from inside building, parking areas, and school grounds. Sweep entranceways. Make minor repairs, and replace light bulbs as required. Keep mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, boiler rooms and custodial closets clean, neat and organized. Clean up after sick students. Assist in setting up and moving furniture and equipment for daily operations, summer cleaning and special events. Assist in receiving and moving deliveries of storeroom materials. Perform duties in cafeteria as directed. Take care of emergencies and any work as directed by the Building Principal or Administrator. Clean and restock restrooms throughout the day.

      Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

      Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

      SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; and operating equipment used in educational (school) cleaning; planning, prioritizing, scheduling, coordinating, assigning, inspecting, and reviewing assigned custodial duties and responsibilities. Accomplishing minor repair tasks in area of assignment; ability to follow policies, procedures, training and corrective actions. Communication and effective interaction with co-workers, managers, subordinates, staff and the general public sufficient to exchange information and to receive work direction.

      KNOWLEDGE is required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job which includes: pertinent codes, policies, procedures, regulations and/or laws; health standards and hazards; methods of industrial cleaning; and safety practices and procedures; principles and practices of custodial operations for an educational (school) setting; applicable building and construction laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as they apply to custodial operations; custodial supply and inventory control practices and principals.

      ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related
      equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; and communicating with diverse groups. Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods and directing other persons within a small work unit.       EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

      Possession of a High School diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.) and five years of skilled custodial experience is preferred.

      LICENSES:

      Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
      Low Pressure Boiler License – Required.
