Job Description

- Participates in orientation and use of tools and equipment.
- Obtains valid flagging certification. Performs duties of traffic control.
- Obtains valid CPR and fist aid cards.
- Receives defensive driver orientation and training with review of Company policy.
- Assists in work as assigned, such as loading and unloading and clean-up of vehicles, drives smaller vehicles, operates forklift and material hauling truck.
- Obtains medical certificate required to drive trucks.
- Receives training in truck driving and obtains a Washington State Class-A commercial driver's license (CDL).
- Learns Peninsula Light Company operating and clearance procedures.
- Learns use of radio equipment and emergency procedures for radio use.
- Assists journey-level employees in construction, maintenance and repair of overhead transmission systems, overhead and underground distribution systems, equipment operation and related activities.
- Perform bucket rescue and vault rescue as required. Perform the ground portion of pole top rescue as required.
- Receives training on standards and practices of overhead and underground line construction, maintenance, repair and related work assignments.
- Receives training on warehousing procedures and preparation of stock issues and returns.
- Performs duties of brushing and cutting tees along right-of-ways.
- Performs duty of numbering poles. Becomes familiar with the Company's grid system, system maps and address location of equipment.
- Performs heavy manual labor using hand and power tools in the construction, maintenance and repair of the Company's systems.
- Receives training on hazardous material handling and precautions.
- Receives training on basic electricity as applied to the Company's facilities, equipment and work requirements for Line Helpers and Equipment Operators.
- Drive Company vehicles with or without trailers or other equipment in tow.

- Learns use of ropes and knots.
- Learns safe rigging skills.

- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in electrical utility construction, maintenance and repair work.
- Knowledge of fundamentals of mathematics and simple algebra.
- Knowledge of fundamentals of electricity, circuits and wire systems.
- Ability to read maps, plans, work sketches, and specification sheets.
- Knowledge of proper use of rubber and plastic protective devices, such as gloves, blankets, wire cover, line hose, boots, and other insulating devises.
- Ability to use ropes, blocks, shovels, wrenches, rules, pliers, saws, hammers, pike pools, jack-hammers, and specialized electrical tools and to clean and assist in their maintenance.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to maintain interpersonal skills of tact, patience and courtesy.
GENERAL FUNCTION
Under the direction of the Working Foreman or a Journeyman or other designated supervisor, persons work assisting in construction, maintenance and repair of electric utility systems and related services. This is responsible, semi-skilled work in a series of progressions intended to provide orientation, training and experience in steps as described below. The classification progression does not require a bid, but is contingent on satisfactory job performance evaluation and successful completion of skill and on-the-job training requirements within the time frames defined.
Union represented position with pay schedule. Entry Step $25.93/hr. Top Step $41.96/hr.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a non-supervisory position.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Individual assigned to this position will work in field conditions under adverse weather situations. During system emergencies, individual is expected to work extended, out-of-routine hours. Position requires ability to lift up to 75 pounds; ability to climb stairs and ladders, and push and pull. An employee in this position may be exposed to hazardous materials, substances or circumstances, and to noise from equipment.
RECRUITING REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or G.E.D. Course work in electricity, mathematics and mechanical fundamentals as it pertains to line and substation construction. Individual must possess a valid Washington State driver's license, and be able to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) with a Class-A endorsement. Must be willing to be available and responsive to emergency call-outs.
