      Job Description


      The Head of Commercial is responsible for developing and leading the critical commercial functions for our Bristol heat networks team.

      The Commercial team is an essential element in our future success; taking responsibility for ensuring that our heat networks are developed, built and operated to deliver Vattenfall's ambitious growth plans and financial performance targets.

      The Head of Commercial will oversee management of our obligations under a range of contracts and activities, including:

      • Concession agreements
      • Construction contracts
      • Connection agreements
      • Heat supply and offtake agreements
      • Land acquisition
      • Planning

      The Commercial team supports the preparation and negotiation for new heat network development and new customer connections- including pricing of capital works, new connections and network energy tariffs. Applying for, and management of, grant support schemes for the development and construction of heat networks is also overseen in the Commercial team – as well as annual business planning, internal and external reporting and portfolio risk management activities.

      You will be a member of the Bristol Heat Management Team, which collectively has oversight over the whole business and responsibility to grow the business and deliver Vattenfall’s strategy. You will work closely with colleagues in the Legal, Finance and Procurement departments to innovate, finding alternative commercial structures which reduce risk or increase value by better meeting clients’ needs, really understanding the interplay between risks, client requirements, contractual terms, CAPEX investment, OPEX and related sub-contracts. Close alignment with these departments, as well as your Business Development and Engineering colleagues, will be critical to ensuring our collective success.

      Through your team and your own activity, you will have oversight of a large number of deals currently in development and negotiation. Across all of these you will ensure rigour by providing review, challenge and approval of commercial assumptions, business cases and financial models. The Vattenfall Group governance process will be one of your priorities, working with your colleagues to ensure our deals progress through the various stage-gates. You will be the owner of our commercial processes and internal governance within the Bristol team. To deliver continuous improvement you will periodically review the team’s capabilities, training needs, processes and tools as well as flexing resource allocation to manage capacity and capability constraints.

      The role will be pivotal to the business’ growth, with responsibility for supporting the business to secure new customers, progress projects to Final Investment Decision and subsequent CAPEX commitments efficiently delivered.

      Key Responsibilities / Duties

      • Develop and lead the Bristol commercial team, that is able to effectively deliver required business objectives
      • Review, challenge and approve commercial assumptions, business cases and financial models
      • Manage and provide oversight for financial modelling provided by Analysts and in-house Valuations team across the portfolio of deals
      • Be the commercial lead on our largest deals working with Business Development and Engineering colleagues to deliver technical and commercial proposals to clients, both private developers and public sector clients, negotiating and closing contracts and securing approval for Final Investment Decision (FID)
      • Ensure projects progress through Vattenfall stage-gates and internal governance groups
      • Contribute to innovation around commercial and financial structures
      • Working with Engineering ,Delivery and Procurement colleagues to scope and manage major partnerships with consultants and delivery partners
      • Represent Vattenfall Heat with clients, customers, government ministers, and other stakeholders

      Knowledge and Skills

      • An understanding of contract law, preferably including construction law from the perspective of previous work in commercial or even legal roles
      • Understanding of UK energy and property markets particularly focusing on the drivers for low carbon energy
      • Ability to work in the interfaces between technical, commercial, operations, construction, and legal specialists, bringing people together
      • Managing projects to strict and challenging deadlines

      Qualifications and Experience

      • Commercial experience on major, complex deals within relevant sectors (including but not limited to energy, real estate, infrastructure)
      • Team leadership, with direct and project teams, leading through uncertainty and helping to bring structure to projects and teams
      • Proven experience in business development, bidding, and negotiation – with a good understanding of risk management, use of financial models to inform decision making, and ability to understand complex contracting structures
      • Experience in working with senior and C-suite level executives to deliver projects and targets from internal and external organizations
