      The Opportunity


      You will be the leading practitioner for radiological protection at Hartlepool, with responsibility to manage a successful radiological protection programme. You will lead on continuous improvements for the station, working within the corporate framework to ensure that the required level of protection is provided to workers, members of the public and the environment.

      What You’ll Be Doing


      As Head of Radiological Protection you will provide advice and technical support in accordance with licence, regulatory and company requirements. Your role will involve liaising with internal and external stakeholders of all levels, such as to share learning and identify and implement best practices. You will also work closely with station management to implement corporate and station policies and improvement plans.

      You will be responsible for the implementation of key systems that ensure activities are carried out with regard to radiological protection directives, rules and procedures. You will be required to monitor, observe and assess such activities to maintain and reinforce high standards. This will involve your evaluation of the effectiveness of the station radiological protection programme and consequent implementation of changes to improve performance.

      Competence
      You should be able to demonstrate:

      • Depth of technical skill and knowledge, breadth of responsibility, technical expertise and level of influence in radiological protection
      • 5-10 years post graduate experience in operational radiological protection, ideally at a nuclear power station


      Technical
      You should possess and be able to demonstrate:

      • Knowledge of U.K. legislation, Site Licence Conditions and company policy pertaining to radiological protection and emergency preparedness
      • Knowledge of company and station radiological protection procedures, rules and instructions
      • An ability to apply radiological safety principles in a nuclear power plant
      • A detailed understanding of WANO/INPO guidelines for radiological protection at nuclear power plants and the key performance indicators that measure the health of the radiological protection programme.

      Who you are


      To succeed in this role should be educated to a minimum HNC/HND. A qualification as an Accredited Health Physicist (or similar) is essential and you should have membership of The Society of Radiological Protection at chartered status or be working towards this.

      If you are degree qualified this may be advantageous.

      You will be able to communicate effectively to all levels of the organisation, as well as with external stakeholders and have the ability to deliver effective actions based on business needs.

      You will be a holder of, or working towards, an appointment as a Radiation Protection Advisor.

      Applicants will be required to obtain CTC level vetting prior to taking up their duties.

      To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
