HEALTH ASSISTANT
DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the site principal and credentialed District School Nurse, the health assistant will provide care for students who are ill, injured, need medication, need medical assistance, etc. Be knowledgeable about and implement student's Individualized Health Plan. The Health Assistant will provide a variety of health-related clerical duties.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The primary responsibility of this position will be to assist the school nurse by providing first aid, administering medication, assisting and supporting students who have chronic medical conditions and/or are medically fragile.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Following training by and under the supervision of a credentialed school nurse, provides
• specialized physical health care procedures, i.e., catheterization, blood glucose monitoring,
• tracheotomy suctioning, use of a feeding tube, etc. to specific students as outlined in the
• student's Individualized Health Plan.
• Maintains pupil health records in a confidential manner.
• Administers and monitors medication logs for each student.
• Monitors activities of students relevant to safety where students have limited muscular
• control.
• Assists District School Nurse as needed.
DUTIES:
• Assists students in personal care such as toileting, dressing, grooming and eating.
• Based on student's doctor's order, conduct glucometer checks, compute carbohydrate intakes and determine and administer amount of insulin needed.
• Feeds children unable to feed themselves using special feeding equipment as necessary.
• Provides medical assistance consistent with training and policy.
• Accompanies student on school field trips, if needed.
• Assists student with mobility around school campus, if needed.
• Knowledge of the school nurse's schedule and activities.
• Refers students with health concerns (emotional and physical) to the school nurse.
• Provides information to children and/or their parents about the Medi-Cal system and where and how to access applications.
• Copies and distribute Medi-Cal information to children and their families.
• Clerical support for Medi-Cal eligibility outreach and for health services referrals.
• Informs children and/or their parents about medical services available through school or in the local community.
• Refers children to medical services covered by Medi-¬Cal.
• Assists families and students with paperwork necessary to complete Medi-Cal and/or healthy Families applications.
• Assists with the preparation of data required for MAA claiming.
• Attends MAA Time Survey training and ongoing MAA program policy/proceduresmeetings.
• Other duties as assigned by the school nurse.
QUALIFICATIIONS:
• Ability to function within legal and ethical constraints of the position: trustworthy and confidential.
• Ability and knowledge to work with health and medical needs in a sensitive, patient and nurturing manner.
• Knowledge of universal precautions and blood borne pathogens.
• Ability to take direction from school nurse, student's teacher and/or site administrator.
• Ability to establish and maintain rapport with children and adults.
• Present a professional and healthy appearance.
• Sufficient vision to see small print.
• Sufficient hearing to hear normal telephone conversations.
• Possession of valid California Drivers License.
• Willingness to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Must provide own transportation if required to work at more than one school site.
• Possesses ability to read, understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Ability to work one-on-one with students.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
• High School graduate.
• Within six months of employment, acquire and maintain certificates in First Aid and
• CPR.
• Previous health care experience desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Position may require heavy physical labor including ability to lift, carry, push, pull and
• move heavy objects or materials.
• Great physical demand for strength and endurance.
• Physical functions involve heavy physical exertion.
• Lifting over 50 lbs. or carrying any object over 25 lbs.
