      Job Title: Health Careers Staff Assistant

      The Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers (EMK) seeks an exceptional Health Careers Staff Assistant who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders. Kennedy Academy teachers and leaders are committed to the vision of high expectations for achievement, equal access to high levels of instruction, the achievement of academic proficiency for all students, and the closing of the achievement gap among subgroups within the schools.

      Kennedy Academy is a Horace Mann In-District Charter High School. It is a college preparatory and vocational high school for Boston students exploring careers in health and health-related professions. The Academy provides a supportive learning environment that promotes respect and embraces diversity. Students will attain the life skills needed to become productive and positive members of society. Kennedy Academy is a great place for those who seek to work in an environment that supports their creativity and innovation and respects their skills and abilities as an educator.

      In addition, over the next five years, Kennedy Academy will double in size, add new health career pathways, college courses, work-based learning, and offer graduates access to good-paying careers at Mass General Brigham thanks to Bloomberg Philanthropies' $38 million grant, which marks the largest philanthropic investment in BPS history.

      Background Overview

      The Health Careers Assistant provides support to the Health Careers program by assisting with classroom activities, managing resources, and helping students develop practical skills in health-related fields. This role is essential in facilitating the learning environment for students pursuing careers in healthcare.

      RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Collaborate with the EMK Director of Career and Technical Education to enhance curriculum and learning resources.
      • Participate in the development and implementation of new instructional techniques and materials.
      • Assist in organizing career days, health fairs, and other events that promote health careers.
      • Assist Health instructors in preparing materials, equipment, and supplies for lessons and demonstrations.
      • Supervise and guide students during hands-on activities and practice sessions.
      • Support students in mastering CPR, first aid, and other healthcare-related procedures.
      • Provide one-on-one or small group assistance to students needing extra help.
      • Monitor student progress and report concerns to the instructor.
      • Assist students in preparing for assessments and certifications.
      • Maintain and organize student certification documentation.
      • Manage inventory and ensure that classroom and lab environments are properly equipped.
      • Assist in scheduling guest speakers, field trips, and other enrichment activities.
      • Ensure all health and safety regulations are followed during classroom and lab activities.
      • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe learning environment.
      • Respond to any emergencies or injuries that occur in the classroom or lab.

      QUALIFICASTIONS:

      • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
      • Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare setting or educational environment.
      • Skills:
        • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
        • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
        • Ability to work effectively with high school students.
        • Basic knowledge of healthcare practices and procedures.

      QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:

      • Associate’s Degree or coursework in health or education.
      • Experience in urban schools.
      • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes candidates who speak another language add value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates fluent in one of BPS's official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.

      Terms: Managerial, Tier B

      This position is subject to the City of Boston residency requirement. Please refer to www.bostonpublicschools.org/ohc (under "Employee Benefits and Policies") for more information on salary and compensation . Salaries are listed by Unions and Grade/Step.

      Full-time, step set according to candidates’ experience; 223 workdays between July 1st and June 30th each year. As a Horace Mann Charter School, employees are paid a competitive salary in accordance with the BPS managerial scale.

      The employee will be required to adhere to the work conditions, including calendar, schedule, and flexibility established by the School. Common planning time, program, department and committee meetings, and professional development occur on Wednesdays, generally between 2pm- 4pm. Other benefits include Medical and Dental benefits, and eligibility for City of Boston retirement.

      School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.
