To assist the senior nursing staff in ensuring that all clinical equipment is kept in good working order and ready for use.

Assisting medical and other staff with procedures and as a chaperone as required.

To promote the importance of good clinical practice throughout the department, acting as an ambassador for high standards and good patient care at all times.

The ability to be involved in influencing change to promote an effective environment for patients and staff.

Support and train new staff with internal training and the induction process.

To be involved in continuous development in keeping up to date knowledge on the healthcare assistant's role.

Support the use of competency assessments in the practice area.

Provide assessment of Junior healthcare assistants competency documents and care certificate.

To assist all team members as required in the direct delivery of patient care. Undertake/ assist in personal care duties for patients when required. Ensure privacy and dignity is maintained.

Utilise appropriate moving and handling aids to reduce the risk of injury to the patient and themselves. Ensure the safe transfer of patients to Wards and Departments using trolleys and wheelchairs which require steering and manipulation.

To have knowledge of clinical observations, glucose monitoring and urinalysis, all requiring the use of equipment or tools and require an understanding of the correct escalation process, reporting patient conditions to a senior member of staff.

To assist in the induction of new staff within the department, demonstrating duties to new starters. Lead in setting an example to new starters to ensure safe and effective care.

To organise own daily workload, adjusting and prioritising appropriately as the department actively dictates.

Communicatefactual information to patients regarding their condition within your clinical remit. Patients may have barriers to understanding such as a physical or mental disability, including dementia and so information will need to be delivered with tact, empathy, and sensitivity.

- GCSE level or Functional Skills in Maths & English or equivalent knowledge
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience
- NHS CARE Certificate
- Knowledge of personal care and activities of daily living
- Studying Nursing or Midwifery or similar at university
- Awareness of importance of infection prevention & control
- Understanding of the importance of safe working practices
- Understanding of the role of a Healthcare Assistant
- Awareness of NHS policies

Job summary
Senior Healthcare Assistant
Department: Emergency Department
Band 2/3 pro rata if part-time
Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

The Emergency Department (ED) are currently looking for FIVE new Healthcare Assistants. The role of the ED is to treat patients who have serious medical conditions, life-threatening illnesses/injuries and limb-threatening problems by providing a 24-hour care to an average of 240 patients every day. Therefore, you will need to always be pro-active, alert and ready for anything.
As a Healthcare Assistant in the Emergency Department, you will work collaboratively with Staff Nurses, Consultants and ambulance staff.
We are looking for pro-active, enthusiastic, compassionate individuals who understand the importance of excellence in health and safety and who enjoy working as part of a team.
You must be understanding of accurate documentation within the workplace, be self-motivated be wanting to improve patient lives and be caring at all times.
