      Position Overview

      Under the clinical supervision of the Audiologist the Newborn Hearing Screener screens the hearing of infants according to established provincial and regional guidelines. The Screener monitors and troubleshoots hearing screening equipment, disseminates client materials, documents and communicates results as well as arranges follow up appointment according to the program protocols. The Screener works collaboratively with nursing staff and audiology staff in the identification of, completion of and documentation of the hearing screening of the newborn. The Newborn Hearing Screener functions under the Vision, Mission and Strategic Priorities of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority while following the established evidence-based practices, protocols and required education developed for the Manitoba Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program.

      Experience

      • Previous experience working with infants/children in a health care setting preferred.
      • Previous experience working as a Rehabilitation Assistant or Health Care Aid preferred.
      • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be assessed.

      Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

      • Complete high school education, Manitoba Standards, required.
      • Rehabilitation Assistant, Nursing Assistant (e.g., Health Care Aid) education preferred.

      SPECIAL TRAINING:

      • Basic computer skills and Medical Terminology required.
      • Successful completion of the in-house training provided by supervising Audiologist within one month of hire.
      • Successful completion of refresher training as per established protocol.

      Qualifications and Skills

      • Strong English oral and written communication skills.
      • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
      • Accurate word processing at 40 words per minute; computer skills including Windows, MS Office (Word, Excel), etc.
      • Excellent organization skills.
      • Ability to work independently.

      Physical Requirements

      • Manual dexterity
      • Ability to travel to provide infant screening at hospitals and community locations in Winnipeg.
      • Required to work evening and weekends.
      • May be required to work extended hours.
      • May be exposed to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, radiation, toxic materials, allergens, physical and emotional stress.
      • May encounter aggressive and/or agitated clients/visitors/staff.

      This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
