      Job Summary:

      To provide daily care and monitors the health of animals at the High Park Animal Display. To monitor inventory of feed and other supplies.

      Machines and Equipment Used:

      Truck with or without trailer, utility vehicles, string trimmer, handheld blower, snow blower, animal restraints, medical equipment, city vehicle, office equipment.

      Major Responsibilities:

      • Provides daily care of animals including feeding, watering, grooming, cleaning, etc.
      • Monitors inventory of feed and other supplies and informs Supervisor or admin staff of quantities required.
      • Researches, creates and implements activities for the enrichment of the animals such as training and diet.
      • Maintains good sanitary living conditions for animals.
      • Observes and reports illness or injury. Treats minor injuries and/or assists veterinarian in administering health care. Escalates issues to the Veterinarian as required. Liaises with outside agencies regarding animal health.
      • Administers medications for animals under the direction of the Veterinarian. Determines dosage/calculation based on established guidelines.
      • Tracks and monitors vaccination and testing schedules maintained in house.
      • Maintains animal records such as health, age, sex, and lineage. Arranges for selective breeding based on established practices and standard operating procedures.
      • Performs emergency interventions, as required.
      • Determines animal acquisition and departure schedule and informs the Supervisor. Arranges for animal transfers.
      • Transports animals in animal trailer outside of High Park/city as required.
      • Moves animals from one enclosure/shelter to another as necessary.
      • Captures and contains wild non-zoo animals both injured and sick at the Zoo. Coordinates with animal services for public safety.
      • Observes the need and arranges for specialty grooming of animals as needed.
      • Provides overview of required duties to seasonal staff as required.
      • Provides training to volunteers on the safe handling of small animals.
      • May provide direction to contractors and labourer(s).
      • Responds to inquiries from public. Attends and participates in meetings related to future zoo improvements. Participates in media interviews related to zoo animals and activities as required
      • Arranges for cremation of deceased animals with crematorium staff.
      • Organizes and hosts special events, tours and programs at the Zoo. Coordinates volunteer activities.
      • Maintains grounds and equipment and makes minor repairs when necessary.
      • Completes reports (e.g., Driver’s Collision/Incident Report) related to assigned duties and responsibilities and documents in log book activities related to animal husbandry.

      Key Qualifications:

      Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

      1. Considerable experience in large and small animal care.
      2. Considerable experience in handling a variety of large and small animals.
      3. Experience in maintaining sanitary living conditions for animals.
      4. Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements.

      You must also have:

      • Effective communication skills.
      • Ability to work effectively with the volunteers, visitors, and other staff.
      • Ability to work in varying climatic conditions.
      • Ability to work rotating shifts including weekdays and weekends.
      • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
      • Must be available to work various shifts, evenings, weekends and holidays. Must be physically capable of performing required duties.
