      Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

      Essential Duties:

      • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
      • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
      • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
      • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
      • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
      • Operates light and heavy equipment.
      • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
      • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
      • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

      Minimum Qualifications:

      Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

      Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

      Licenses and Certifications:

          • Must have a valid *Commercial Class "A" Driver License (CDL) at time of application with an N Endorsement, and with no restrictions - This position requires you to drive a state vehicle for TxDOT.

      Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

      • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
      • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
      • Subject to noise

      • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
      • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
      • Balancing- walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
      • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
      • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
      • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
      • Standing-prolonged periods of time
      • Walking- moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
      • Talking- expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
      • Hearing- perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
      • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

      • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
      • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
        • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
      • Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
