- Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
- Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
- Must have or have obtained Standard Transmission and Tractor/Trailer endorsements, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
- Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
- Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers
- Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
- Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
- Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
!*!The Hondo Maintenance Office is located in Medina county just west of San Antonio. Our Maintenance personnel are responsible for maintaining over 800 lane miles, including the major corridors on US 90 and IH 35. We use practices such as base repair, maintainer level up, pothole repair, sign/delineation maintenance, and other operations to keep state roadways safe for the traveling public.
Starting Annual Salary:
General Transportation Tech I - $37,918 - $58,130
General Transportation Tech II - $39,976 - $61,399
This position is for (1) General Transportation Tech I or II depending on business need and applicant's qualifications. TxDOT reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicants work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors
