      Histology Associate

      11 AM to 7:30 PM

      Full Time

      Responsibilities:

      Daily laboratory maintenance duties of all the laboratory equipment as assigned by the laboratory supervisor and policies. Includes tissue processors, fixation stations, embedding centers and all histological equipment including stainers. Disposes of chemical waste in accordance with departmental and hospital regulations.

      Using the LIS software (including all tracking and error reports described in the policies and procedures), May print worklists and aide in prioritizing daily workflow as directed. Responsible for quality control of blocks and slides. Ensures all blocks and slides are clerically correct. Distribute slides to residents and staff pathologists. Keeps accurate records of blocks and slides produced. Files tissue blocks, ensuring each is properly labeled. Reports cassette printer deviations accordingly.

      Responsible for collecting all blocks and slides for clinical testing, validation or optimization of testing. Distributing blocks and slides to Histology Technical Personnel for microtomy and/or testing.

      Uses the tracking system to manage slide and block storage in and out of the laboratory, including research.

      May handle send out testing to other CLIA laboratories approved by the department, including electronic documentation, contacting the laboratories, and setting up curriers for delivery or FeDex.

      May share responsibility for preparation of solutions and reagents in accordance with approved procedures.


      Responsible for maintaining tissue processors and fixation stations in accordance with policy. Responsible for setting up the frozen section laboratory. This includes cleaning the staining area, preparing the staining rack and replacing staining solutions.

      Use LIS system to perform daily lab operations. Various other duties as assigned. Be part of LIS new implementations and any operational testing as well as giving feedback to optimize the LIS.

      May be responsible for off-hours pager coverage on a rotating basis.

      Respnisible for accurate and timely slide delivery, including associated paperwork and complete case compilation.

      Responsible for daily duties of ARCOS archive system, including reporting discrepancies to supervisor immediately.

      Responsible for maintaining lab cleanliness and reducing clutter by unpacking and organizing supplies appropriately in a timely fashion.

      Responsible for daily removal of paraffin from processing room floor.

      Responsible for reporting low supply stock to inventory officer and/ or supervisor.

      Responsible for para-trimming blocks to ensure all blocks are ready for microtomy in a timely fashion with appropriate LIS scan.

      Will operate according to policy when utilizing Slide File room locations to access archive materials.

      Qualifications:

      Minimum of a high school degree. Basic understanding of the functions of a histology laboratory and its relationship to patient care. Familiarity with medical terminology and above average math skills preferred. Not required, but HT(ASCP) eligibility preferred.
