      Summary

      Under the supervision of the Pathology supervisor, the histotechnologist performs technical functions in the Histology laboratory to provide high quality microscopic slides of tissue for the detection of disease.

      Education

      Four years of formal training or education beyond the high school level (e.g., Bachelor Degree in the field of Laboratory Science of equivalent).

      Certification, Registration, and Licensure

      Certification required to obtain: Histotechnologist (American Society Clinical Pathologist) within one year of employment.

      Experience

      One year experience in a Histology lab and/or completion of a CAHEA (Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation) accredited Histology program.

      Responsibilities

      • Exercises independent judgement in dealing with procedural and technical problems.
      • Trains or directs Pathology Laboratory Assistants and Histology Technicians engaged in laboratory and processing techniques.
      • Serves as resource in performing Immunohistochemistry procedures along with validation procedures of new antibodies and equipment.
      • Is the Histology resource in the absence of the Supervisor.
      • Performs Microtomy (sectioning of surgical and autopsy tissue specimens).
      • Embeds tissue specimens.
      • Performs Immunohistochemistry procedures on surgical and autopsy cases.
      • Performs routine H-E staining procedures.
      • Performs specialized selective techniques required for diagnostic purposes, to include, bone decalcification, muscle, kidney and nerve biopsies, and frozen tissue sectioning techniques.
      • Performs special stain procedures for histology and cytology specimens as outlined by the Histology Special Stains Procedure Manual.
      • Maintains Histologic equipment and Quality Assurance/Quality Control documentation.
      • Performs projects and other related duties.
      • Demonstrates compliance with corporate, departmental and job-specific requirements.
      • Participates in change and process improvements.

      While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to blood borne pathogens, and bodily fluids. The employee is frequently exposed to airborne contaminants, airborne pathogens, and moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards - shock, non-weather related heat or cold, and slippery surfaces.

      The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
