- Performs STAT and routine histological procedures (preparation, processing, and/or staining of patient tissues) prior to the microscopic study and diagnosis by the Pathologist
- Processes and embeds tissue in paraffin and cuts paraffin blocks using microtomes at correct setting determined for individual tissue types
- Follows Standard Operating Procedures, prepares stains and solutions, stains prepared tissue (including frozen slides and cytology cytospin preparations) by using routine, special and immunohistochemical staining processes
- Coverslips and evaluates microscopically the quality of stains and sections
- Performs immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence, special stains, and frozen section studies
- Digital Imaging experience as the position requires
- Maintains patient identification at all times according to lab practice.
- Prepares and maintains slides, solutions, and hazardous chemicals for recycling
- Maintains equipment for proper functioning, quality control and supply inventories
- Maintains supplies and ensures clean work environment according to hospital's standard and approved protocols
- Participates in inter-shift coverage for time off, emergencies and holidays
- Prepares slides and blocks maintaining patient identification according to lab practices
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological, Chemical or Life Science required
- 1-3 years of full time acceptable clinical experience in a histopathology laboratory highly preferred IHC experience preferred
- Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnology program
- Certified as HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) preferred
Overview
Atlantic Health System is seeking a full-time Histology Technologist for the Atlantic Consolidated Laboratory in Morris Plains to work 3pm - 11pm including every other weekend.
Responsibilities
The Histotechnologist – Anatomic Pathology is responsible for performing all routine cutting and staining of surgical specimens, including IHC and special stains. Prepares tissues for microscopic diagnosis by a Pathologist utilizing a variety of manual, semi-automated and automated technologies. Responsible for maintaining the integrity of tissue through the pre-analytic to post-analytic phase in the Anatomic Pathology laboratory. Responsible for producing slides of good to superior quality and works closely with the Pathologist to provide slides in an efficient and timely manner.
Excellent analytical and communication skills are required to direct or provide information to clients, clinicians, or hospital divisions which will directly impact patient care.
Maintains equipment and supplies as needed.
