      Job Description

      To ensure that all aspects of the programs and services related to the City's museums and Historical and Fine Art collections are authentic and historically accurate to maintain the City's credibility with the public, the international tourism market, the academic sector and other museums and related institutions. To provide research services to other City departments for projects such as naming, public events, public art, public dedications such as commemorative plaques, and other projects as assigned.

      Major Responsibilities:

      • Ensures that all aspects of the programs and services related to the City's Museums and Historical and Fine Art collections are authentic and historically accurate.
      • Develops and implements plans and policies specific for Economic Development and Culture division.
      • Ensures a high level of authenticity by conducting advanced professional, historical and material culture research in order to expand understanding of the City's history, and facilitates understanding through the use of various communication methods such as writing books, articles and other publications, museum exhibits, web resources, collecting oral histories and community stories, lectures and the production of other products of high quality public and academic benefit.
      • Provides research, statistical and content analysis and policy development support in all areas of the Division's interests related to the City's Museums and Historical and Fine Art collections.
      • Utilizes subject matter expertise to provide historical perspective on Toronto, identifies opportunities to promote and position City of Toronto museums as key sources of information on a broad range of historical topics.
      • Provides leadership in identifying historical research priorities, conducts, coordinates research and identifies and recruits partner organizations, grant opportunities and other resources in order to achieve research goals.
      • Establishes and maintains effective partnerships and agreements in a multiple stakeholder environment.
      • Acts in an advisory capacity regarding budget planning and preparation. Ensures that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations.
      • Provides expert historical, material culture, interpretive expertise and develops innovative content for programs, special events and festivals to achieve the City's heritage-related goals.
      • Identifies, develops and negotiates solutions to museological and archaeological challenges.
      • Works collaboratively with other City divisions and agencies to achieve the City's heritage-related goals.
      • Works with Policy and Partnership to ensure that public naming information is accurate
      • Represents the Division and acts as media spokesperson for historical topics.
      • Provides leadership, expert advice and consultation to Museums & Heritage Services site staff, translating pure research into the development of programs, special events, exhibit concepts and interpretive strategies. Identifies external organizations as exhibit and programming partners.
      • Makes recommendations for the acquisition of new artifacts, specimens and artworks related to the Historical and Fine Art collections. Conducts material culture research, cultivates potential donors, and negotiates the purchase/loan of artifacts, specimens and artworks on the antique market. Oversees archaeological and site-specific collecting endeavors.
      • Utilizes professional standing to obtain research and similar grants, and to represent the City's interests in these areas effectively and with authority.
      • Drafts and prepares reports for the signature of the Chief Curator.
      • Advises and guides academic students on projects.

      Key Qualifications:

      Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

      1. Post-secondary degree in history or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
      2. Extensive experience in a museological or academic institution, or in professional consulting.
      3. Extensive experience in conducting historical research using a variety of sources coupled with strong analytical and organizational skills.
      4. Extensive experience in communicating the results of historical research to the public through a variety of methods.
      5. Extensive experience in applying historical and material culture research to a broad range of topics in Toronto’s history.

      You must also have:

      • Demonstrated track record in the publication of original research.
      • Proficiency utilizing a variety of software packages, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
      • Proficiency using information storage systems; various methods of recording and retaining historical record
      • Highly developed communication skills, both written and oral, including an ability to simplify complex information and transmit it to a variety of audiences.
      • Good judgement in public relations with well-developed interpersonal skills, including an ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with staff at all levels, stakeholders and the general public.
