      Position Summary :

      The Alaska Site Laboratory Histology Technician II is responsible for helping to manage the overall workflow of the laboratory. The Technician will perform all laboratory specific duties including grossing, histology, client relations, and assisting in surgical procedures. The Technician is responsible for adhering to HIPAA standards and strict Standard Operating Procedures and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Environmental hazards such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc. are present in the workplace. This position may be selected by supervisor as Lead with Lead responsibilities.

      Position Schedule : 3:00 AM - 11:30AM, rotating weekend on-call schedule

      Essential Duties:

      • Embed tissue specimens into paraffin wax blocks and cut sections of anatomic tissues for microscopic examination
      • Performs maintenance and daily operational tasks on equipment including, but not limited to processors, microtomes, strainers, IHC, imaging and coverslipping machines
      • Provides customer services to resolve client issues and schedules procedures
      • Grosses simple to moderate complexity cases
      • Prepares Frozen Sections for diagnosis
      • Assists with in-patient FNA and bone marrow procedures
      • Performs IHC testing and quality control, assisting with validations as needed
      • Prepares reagents
      • Labels slides and distributes cases to pathologist
      • Trains new staff and performs competency assessments as needed
      • Troubleshoot dictation, accessioning, technical & communication issues
      • Assists with quality assurance and fulfilling compliance requirement
      • Other duties as assigned

      Qualifications

      Qualifications/Experience:

      • HT/HTL (ASCP) certified preferred
      • Non-certified techs will be considered
      • Required BS in science and must be high complexity testing eligible as follows:
        • An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or Medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR
        • Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR
        • 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. In addition, the individual must have laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR
        • At least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
      • 1 year of Histology experience preferred
      • Familiarity with intermediate laboratory chemistry
