What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Accurately code inpatient conditions and procedures using ICD guidelines and UHDDS
- Assign appropriate MS-DRG or APR-DRG for complex inpatient services
- Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists to address documentation concerns
- Assist in preparing responses to DRG validation requests and third-party payer inquiries
- Review medical record documentation to identify and assign necessary coding
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Minimum educational requirement: AHIMA or AAPC approved Medical Coding Diploma or Health Information Management Degree
- Minimum of three years of progressive inpatient coding experience in an acute care facility
- Active credential of Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), RHIT, or RHIA required at the time of hire
- Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding guidelines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience with electronic health record systems
- Academic or level I or II trauma experience is a plus
- AAPC credential, preferably CIC (Certified Inpatient Coder)
