      About MSF-USA | Doctors Without Borders

      Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization providing medical care to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care in over 70 countries. We were formed in France in 1971 as an association by a group of doctors and journalists to go to emergency situations and to treat patients with dignity while bearing witness independently of geopolitical boundaries. MSF is now a global movement of more than 25 MSF organizations, working in over 70 countries. We cooperate as an international, independent, medical humanitarian association that offers medical assistance to populations in distress, victims of natural or manmade disasters, and civilian victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, age, gender/sex, national or ethnic origin, color, disability, sexual orientation, genetic information, or political affiliation and provides assistance to the population in distress and intervenes worldwide.       About the Program Department

      The Programs Department at MSF-USA supports the MSF Social Mission and consists of multiple units including advocacy, representation, and research arms of both MSF-USA and the international offices of MSF including the Grants Unit. Units served and/or supported by the Program Department include the Humanitarian Representation Team (HRT), Access Campaign, Epicentre, MSF-USA domestic projects and other special projects related to medical and operational priorities of MSF.

      The Humanitarian Representation Team (HRT) is responsible for carrying out humanitarian diplomacy on behalf of MSF’s global operations to ensure that the needs of our patients are understood by the people shaping international and medical policies. The US-based team includes the Humanitarian Representative to the United Nations and the Humanitarian Representative to the United States. The HRT is part of the Programs Department at MSF-USA. Units served and/or supported by the Programs Department include the Humanitarian Representation Team (HRT), Access Campaign, Epicentre, MSF-USA domestic projects and other special projects related to medical and operational priorities of MSF.

      About the Project

      Provide support to the HRT Team while gaining practical experience and developing research, diplomacy, and advocacy skills. The position may at times also help support other units within the Programs Department for specific projects.

      This role reports to the Humanitarian Representation Team. The intern position is ideal for an applicant interested in the social mission of Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and who is also seeking meaningful experience at an International Non-Governmental Organization.

      Roles Specific Accountabilities

      The HRT Intern will be expected to perform the following tasks:

      • Conduct research on humanitarian actors and topics
      • Summarize reports and conduct literature reviews based on academic publications
      • Attend and summarize external meetings on topics relevant to the work of the team (primarily online)
      • Assist in the preparation of briefing documents and other information for advocacy and policy engagements
      • Contact database management
      • Create shareable content for stakeholders and compile internal updates including content for the Program Department newsletter
      • Occasional administrative tasks
      • Other tasks as assigned

      Background Preferred

      • A bachelor’s degree or progress toward a higher degree in a field related to the work of the HRT (international relations, policy, or law, global and public health)
      • A genuine interest in medical humanitarian aid and the mission of MSF and a demonstrated interest (personal, professional, or academic) in international work
      • Excellent attention to detail, strong writing and proofreading ability
      • Initiative and confidence to work independently and ask questions in a fast-paced work environment
      • Creativity, curiosity, and willingness to delve into new topic areas to build and share knowledge
      • Knowledge of or desire to learn about US politics, the UN system, policy development, international humanitarian actors, and the contexts where MSF operates
      • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
      • Experience in performing academic research and literature reviews is a must
      • Experience using a CRM tool is an asset but not required
      • English mandatory, French and/or Spanish language skills strongly preferred

      Our staff works a hybrid schedule of two days a week in the office, three days remote. The required days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from January to June and September to December.
