- Installs, operates, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, such as, central, wall and window air conditioning units; exhaust fans and blowers; walk in and chest type freezers; ice machines and water coolers.
- Troubleshoots systems to determine cause of malfunctions.
- Tests condenser water conditions and adjusts chemical feed as necessary.
- Monitors construction on new heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems to ensure compliance with project drawings and specifications.
- Keeps daily records and logs on operating conditions and repairs to mechanical equipment through the use of a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
- Performs scheduled preventive maintenance tasks.
- Prepares and schedules preventive maintenance programs.
- Requisitions material and equipment for mechanical and electrical maintenance.
- Maintains and tracks inventories valued between $2000 - $10,000.00
- Operates refrigeration gauge, volt/ohm meter, vacuum pump, recovery systems, welding equipment and other related tools and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Knowledge of the operation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
- Knowledge of HVAC safety requirements.
- Knowledge of the electrical aspects of HVAC equipment.
- Skill in using trade related and various hand and power tools.
- Ability to diagnose HVAC equipment using laptop and handheld devices
- Ability to prioritize work.
- Ability to document own work.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems.
- Knowledge of Building Automated Controls (BAC) in the operation, repair, and diagnosis of the systems
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to operate basic computer functions (email, digital timecard, data entry, and others.).
- Ability to coordinate contracted work.
- Ability to follow oral and written instruction.
- Ability to follow established procedures.
- Ability to read and understand HVAC equipment drawings and electrical and mechanical diagrams.
- Knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
- This job requires employees to climb ladders, and work in high places.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to perform a variety of physical tasks, including working in confined spaces, on ladders, scaffolding, towers and lift buckets up to a considerable height.
- Must be able and be willing to be in an on-call status and respond to call outs, working non-standard duty hours and rotating shifts that include nights, weekends and holidays.
- Must be able to operate a standard motor vehicle safely.
- Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate, AND
- Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment;
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License; AND
- Possession of an active EPA 608 Chlorinated Fluorocarbons (CFC) Core, and Type II, & III certification.
- Maintain the ability to pass the background checks required for the position. These background checks may include but are not limited to:
- Criminal History Background Check using Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS)
- Level 1 and Level 2 Background screening (Ch. 435 Florida Statutes)
- Child Abuse, Abandonment and Neglect Record Check using the State Automated Child Welfare Information System (SACWIS)
- Sex Offender and Sexual Predator record check using the list maintained by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)
- Possess the necessary job-related license(s) or certification(s) that may include possession of a Florida Driver License (Class E) or an applicable Commercial Driver License (CDL).
Job Overview
HVAC Technician performs duties related to installing, maintaining and repairing various types of refrigeration, air conditioning and ventilating systems. Employees in this class perform a wide variety of mechanical, electrical and electronic maintenance and repair on various types of heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment, ranging from basic wall or window units and central systems to some large commercial units (e. g. 360-ton chillers; 120-ton condensers.)
