      Job Title: Phlebotomist I

      Job Description

      The main function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

      Responsibilities

      • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
      • Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
      • Clearly explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collections such as urine or fecal samples.
      • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
      • Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
      • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
      • Ensure all test requisitions or computer labels match scripts 100% correctly.
      • Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperatures.
      • Place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately label them, and follow specific procedures for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
      • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
      • Attend annual department trainings.
      • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

      Essential Skills

      • High School Diploma or GED
      • 6 months to 1 year of inpatient or busy lab phlebotomy experience
      • Venipuncture and order of draw knowledge
      • Specimen processing experience including centrifuging, freezing, and splitting samples
      • Customer service skills
      • Experience with both pediatric and geriatric patients
      • Phlebotomy certification

      Additional Skills & Qualifications

      • Experience with all needle types (butterfly and straight gauge)
      • Ability to match tests with tube colors
      • Experience in a fast-paced hospital environment

      Work Environment

      This individual will be working within a busy hospital environment and needs to be experienced with fast-paced settings. Walking and standing all day will be required, with an expectation of 30-50 draws per day.

      Available shifts include: 3am-11:30am, 11pm-7:30am, and 2pm-10:30pm.

      Pay and Benefits

      The pay range for this position is $20.40 - $20.40/hr.
