      The successful candidate, under general supervision of the Indigent Defense Administrator/Attorney, will provide skilled clerical services to support the County's indigent defense program, including interaction with attorneys, court staff, other funding units, administrative staff, and employees at the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission.

      Job Responsibilities:
      • Prepare for payment invoices from attorneys, experts, and investigators; prepare attorney appointments for review; issue appointments after review; and review expert / investigator requests and initial recommendations.
      • Assemble and analyze required information for grant reporting; support annual grant application and County budget submission.
      • Evaluate applications and make initial recommendations regarding indigency and partial indigency.
      • Coordinate with court, funding unit, and jail staff on indigent defense matters.
      • Track attorney compliance with MIDC standards and support attorney performance review.
      • Create standard attorney, expert, and investigator draft contracts for review; issue and track receipt of contracts and associated required documentation.
      • Other duties as assigned.
      High School Diploma or GED combined with post-secondary training in legal or court procedures, or two years para-professional experience in a legal environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

      Working knowledge of the civil, criminal, and juvenile codes of the State of Michigan, SCAO rules, regulations and requirements, and other rules and regulations with respect to Court procedures and process is preferred.

      Ability and desire to identify, evaluate and improve processes.

      Ability to interact positively and professionally with judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers, officers of the Court and members of the general public from widely divergent socio-economic and cultural backgrounds is essential.

      Computer literacy and thorough working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database software. Familiarity with court case management systems is beneficial.
