      Salary Statement :

      The salary for this position traditionally starts at $67,314.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.


      Role Overview :

      The Industrial Hygiene Consultant will assist Hoosier employers with the identification and correction of occupational health-related hazards. Consultants visit employers throughout the state performing industrial hygiene sampling. This position requires the use of air pumps, noise dosimeters, tape measures, and ergonomic test kits to ensure the health and safety of Hoosiers in the workplace. Consultants typically travel out of the office 1-2 days per week. This position also requires technical writing. Sampling results, analyses, and recommendations for corrections are provided to the employer in report form. Occasional overnight and out-of-state travel will be required. This position reports to the IDOL office in Indianapolis.

      A Day in the Life:

      The essential functions of this role are as follows:

      • Conduct inspections, surveys, and investigations of industrial plants to discover, evaluate and control occupational environments hazardous to employee health.

      • Make appropriate measurements of various occupational health hazards, i.e., dust, heat, noise, etc., and determine the magnitude of workers' exposure.

      • Collect samples of dust, fumes, mists, vapors, and gases for laboratory analysis.

      • Prepare letters and reports for administrative and/or regulatory action.

      • Make recommendations on the effectiveness of control measures and procedures that will be suitable and effective for correcting occupational health hazards.

      • Prepare training documents and conducts training of inspection personnel;

      • Investigate employee complaints received from the Indiana Division of Labor.

      • Perform limited supervisory functions over lower-level staff, such as reviewing reports, coordinating activities, conducting training, and evaluating job performance.

      What You'll Need for Success:

      You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

      • Thorough knowledge of and the ability to apply, federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to occupational health standards.

      • Broad knowledge of the sciences, including biology, safety, engineering, chemistry, toxicology, and physiology.

      • Specialized knowledge of complex occupational health hazards and industrial toxic materials and their safe and adequate handling techniques.

      • Working knowledge of training techniques relating to occupational health subject matter.

      • Ability to conduct surveys, extensive inspections and investigations and prepare reports for use as basis for citations and corrective action.

      • Ability to coordinate emergency and disaster situations.

      • Ability to operate sophisticated air collection devices.
