      JOB SUMMARY

      The Infection Preventionist is responsible for and has authority over the Infection Prevention Program, its activities, and is appointed by the Board of Trustees in accordance with CMS. Infection Prevention collaborates with and is supported by all departments which are accountable for compliance with Infection Prevention directives. The primary focus of the Infection Prevention Program is to prevent the transmission of infectious disease.

      The following are general activities included in the purview of the Infection Preventionist:

      Category

      Leadership

      Contribute: subject matter expertise, project management, disaster management, Incident Command and HICs participation, Public Health (local and national) liaison, coaching leaders and frontline staff, committee participation including Chair of Infection Control Committee

      Program Development

      Develop and maintain the Infection Prevention Program in accordance with regulatory requirements and nationally recognized guidelines, participate in performance improvement initiatives

      Investigation

      Surveillance- infections in patients, community; Facilities/Utilities failures; process failures; outbreaks; support Employee Health investigations for employee infections if needed, report notifiable conditions and Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) per regulatory requirements

      Implementation

      Design and apply evidence-based practices and interventions to prevent or manage the transmission of infectious disease

      Education

      Collaborate to provide education to leadership team (peers), frontline staff (RNs, MDs, etc.), patients, community

      Policy/Procedure

      Writing, revising, reviewing- research, literature review

      Accreditation/Licensure

      Quality- maintain knowledge of and ability to implement regulations and the law (leadership) as they pertain to Infection Prevention

      Data

      Provide statistical analysis and presentation/interpretation of surveillance findings, epidemiological tracking, trending

      Major Infectious Disease Disasters

      Pandemic and novel pathogen mitigation- follow local and national guidelines, apply principles of epidemiology in the face of the unknown, address disinformation where possible

      Integrity to Science and Public Health

      Demonstrate personal fortitude in the face of disagreement, lead by example in personal comportment, apply evidence-based infection prevention practice, advise leadership

      IP Education Requirements

      Maintain CIC Certification- participate in continuing education requirements, professional societies, and remain up to date with infectious disease current events/state of the science – financially supported by MHSC

      Environment of Care

      Address construction/renovation, care practices, facilities/maintenance, EVS, products, procedures, survey readiness issues

      JOB QUALIFICATIONS

      Education:

      Bachelor’s degree or higher in an appropriate healthcare science field, qualified through education, training, experience, or certification. Requires a current RN license with BSN preferred, OR Masters in Public Health (MPH), OR certified medical technologist, OR a bachelor's degree in microbiology or epidemiology. It is preferred that the Infection Preventionist has at least two years of clinical experience in Infection Prevention with progressive accountability and leadership abilities. Certification in the area of clinical expertise is required within 2 years of accepting the position. Certification- Certification in Infection Control (CIC). Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a hospital setting.
