- Strategic Insights Centre - aims to empower and equip AFP for the future by delivering horizon and environment scanning and strategic foresight advisory to AFP senior decision makers and business areas.
- Research and Innovation - catalyses innovation and pioneering thinking across the AFP by leading outcome driven initiatives including AFP Innovation Fund, AFP Research Innovation Challenge and by providing specialist advice and support to AFP business areas.
- Support the Coordinator Strategic Insights, Research and Innovation and your team leader, to effectively engage, scope, plan and deliver projects in partnership with AFP client commands and teams;
- Apply your specialist skills and experience to deliver innovative solutions to whole of enterprise challenges, serving as a conduit within AFP business areas;
- Utilise effective project management skills to deliver flagship initiatives, including AFP’s Innovation Fund or Futures Games;
- Plan, deliver and facilitate workshops, training sessions and presentations;
- Partner with like-minded government, law enforcement, industry, academic and international partners to ‘force-multiply’ and accelerate outcomes
- Prepare and present reports on key strategic issues relating to strategic insights innovation, capability development and opportunities for improvement likely to affect the AFP;
- Represent the AFP at ‘Whole of Government’ and other external stakeholder meetings and events as appropriate;
- Maintain constructive working networks, relationships and partnerships internally and externally,
- Play a guiding, mentoring and advisory role to team members;
- Maintain currency and credibility through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Has contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role.
- Outstanding client engagement skills - a proven and credible business partner with the ability to build strong rapport, who is deeply curious and motivated to dig deeper to uncover the client’s underlying needs and drivers
- Initiative and entrepreneurial drive - proactively identifies opportunities for team to create value for the AFP and takes action to execute and realise that opportunity
- Outstanding communication and facilitation skills - experience tailoring and adapting communication to a wide variety of audiences (from executives to employees from a wide range of teams and cultures) across a range of mediums including training delivery
- Comfort operating in an ambiguous context - ability to pivot, react and respond to a fast-changing operating environment while maintaining focus on the overall objective/strategic intent
- Certification and/or contemporary experience applying a methodology related to continuous improvement, including but not limited to Lean, Six Sigma, and Toyota Kata
- Knowledge and experience in applying insights from user research, human centred design, service design or related design discipline to help drive improvement
- Knowledge and experience in process and value stream mapping
- Knowledge and experience in applying quantitative to drive improvements whether this be via quantitative process analysis, process control, operations research, optimisation methodologies or other methodologies
- Experience partnering with the business to deliver improvement initiatives
- Demonstrated experience in organisational strategy, planning or emerging risk, with an emphasis on long range strategy and planning
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in strategic foresight and environmental and horizon scanning and/or scenario planning
- Demonstrated experience in strategic intelligence with a focus on a longer-term time horizon
- Demonstrated experience delivering insights/ business intelligence products that emphasise the ‘so what’ and the implications of the analysis to influence senior decision makers
- Application of any of the above in a government or national security/law enforcement context would be highly regarded
- Demonstrated experience delivering innovative outcomes in a law enforcement or national security setting
- A tertiary qualification in innovation management or other qualification related to or aligned to the practice of innovation such an MBA or qualifications in science communication
- A tertiary qualification in any of the following or related field:
- criminology
- applied sociology/ social research
- evidence based policing studies
- public safety studies related field
- Demonstrated experience in delivering innovation initiatives or applying innovation methodologies such as Jobs to be Done in a large complex organisation either ‘in-house’ or as a consultant
- Proven ability to guide innovators and/or ‘Entrepreneurs’’ knowledge and understanding of how to find the best application or ‘market’ for their idea, service, capability or product - for example gained by supporting the commercialisation of research, bringing an innovative product to market or operationalising an innovative idea in the broader enterprise
- Demonstrated experience applying novel methods or technologies (including AI) to improve business outcome

Policing Development and Innovation is a small dynamic team within the Commissioner’s Chief of Staff Portfolio. Our team delivers high quality whole of enterprise initiatives and business partnering solutions to empower AFP Commands to maximise their impact on the criminal environment now and into the future.
We are seeking client driven and outcome orientated Senior Team Members across a number of our teams:These roles provide whole of agency visibility and exposure and the opportunity to provide advice to the agency’s most senior decision-makers while also providing opportunities to be ‘hands on’ partnering and advising AFP’s business areas.
