Our portfolio of world-class competitive mining operations and undeveloped resources provides the metals and minerals that enable a cleaner, greener, more sustainable world and that meet the fast-growing consumer-driven demands of the world’s developed and maturing economies.

We employ more than 60,000 colleagues worldwide and run mining operations across Southern Africa, North and South America and Australia. Anglo American’s purpose is to reimagine mining to improve people’s lives and is committed to creating a Living Mine that brings positive value to the people and environment where we operate.

      Job Description

We are seeking an Innovation Specialist who will inform the value proposition of the advanced technologies developed by the SandLix & Tailings group (two transformational technologies developed and patented by Anglo American), looking at specific and generic opportunities and determining their techno-economic impact. In this exciting role, you will be responsible for technical oversight of ongoing operational demonstrations, engineering studies, laboratory and pilot scale development efforts, and input into commercialisation discussions and negotiations is required.

Both of these technologies are currently progressing through operational-scale demonstrations, continued development work and scale-up for commercialisation in new and existing assets with the potential to generate significant revenue streams for the company.

      Core Responsibilities (amongst others):

      • Deliver a consistent and outstanding role model in relation to safety practices with a deep understanding and commitment to the performance of safety.
      • Provide input into the continued development of both HDS and SandLix technologies through experimentation, operational tests and trials, and working with a wide range of suppliers including OEMs, consultants, academics and technology providers.
      • Manage, or assist in the management of, contracts with consultants involved in studies with the IDM process; liaising closely with colleagues in the Projects function to ensure smooth transition of projects through the AA governance process.
      • Manage laboratory vendors through all aspects of ongoing test work (setup, preparation, operation and data analysis)
      • Input into techno-economic modelling of the technology; particularly in the comparison of performance with existing or other emerging technologies. Contribute to the understanding of the intangible value that alternative tailings disposal or copper processing delivers to the benefit of all stakeholders.

      Qualifications

      • An undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honours degree or equivalent) in a relevant (preferably Chemical / Mechanical Engineering) technical discipline
      • Knowledge and experience in process design, data management, analysis and reporting activities.
      • One or more of the following specific areas of technical knowledge would be very beneficial:
      • Knowledge and experience in tailings dams design and/or operation; understanding the challenges behind tailings management is desirable.
      • Geotechnical / hydrogeological understanding related to tailings or heap leach design and operation.
      • Understanding / experience of the GISTM (Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management)
      • Heap leaching or hydrometallurgical experience.
