Interact with the customer to provide customer support and education

Identify needs, to determine sources of problems or to provide information on equipment use

Schedule activities, and for support or recommendations for new or existing equipment in regard to installation, upgrades or enhancements

Participate in pre-job briefings and work controls, provide input into procedures

Conduct preventative maintenance activities, perform operational checks/tests
-
Install equipment, perform calibrations to ensure that equipment is meeting operational performance criteria
-
Troubleshoot and repair the equipment
-
May be required to design, fabricate or build equipment or components for customer special requests or to modify equipment, such as panels/brackets, test cabinets, cable assembles, etc.

May be required to conduct PLC programming.

Two-year degree in Electronics or related field or equivalent military or technical school training

A minimum of four years of relevant hands-on maintenance experience in the repair of electronics systems and industrial instrumentation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required

Will be required to maintain electrical worker qualifications.

Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.

A minimum of 3 years’ experience performing basic uncertainty budgeting, working with sensitive, primary-laboratory-level metrology lab equipment and performing metrology laboratory calibrations under an ISO 17025-based, or similarly rigorous quality program is highly desired

Experience writing automated calibration procedures using Fluke’s Met Cal program

Experience developing simple Labview® programs

Demonstrated ability and initiative to perform “as-found” calibration tests, identify out-of-tolerance conditions based on manufacturer specifications, research and identify appropriate adjustment procedures from manufacturer’s manuals, performing adjustments to return equipment performance to in-tolerance conditions and performing “as-left” testing to deliver an in-tolerance device to the ORNL Metrology Laboratory’s customers.

Demonstrated ability and initiative to calibrate primary standards within primary level metrology laboratory, perform basic analysis of data (including Statistical Process Control Charts).

Experience with deadweight gauges, sonic and laminar flow standards, force standards and air velocity calibrations (wind tunnels) is desired.

Experience safely working with pressures ranging from ultra-high vacuum to high pressures (up to 75,000 psi) desired.
-
Experience calibrating temperature measurement devices using Standard Platinum Resistance Thermometers, liquid and fluidized-bed temperature baths.

Experience calibrating Standard Platinum Resistance Thermometers (SPRT) using gas, metal and water fixed-point cells
-
Experience calibrating relative humidity devices using Thunder Scientific two-pressure humidity calibration systems
-
Experience calibrating electrical equipment including multi-meters, spectrum analyzers, function generators, etc.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Overview:
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for an Instrument Technician. In this role you will, under limited supervision, be responsible for performing installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, calibrations on a wide range of electronic components, parts, equipment and systems, applying principles and theories of electronics, to ensure capability in line with internal and published specifications and standards.
